Letters Patent No. 84,921, dated December 15, 1868.
IMPROVED MILK-CAN}.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the different views.
The object of 'this invention is to provide a can in which milk is to be placed for transportation, and which will tend to keep the milk cool, and prevent its souring; and
It consists in placing one or more ice-vessels within the milk-can, and the means by which such vessels are held in their proper position in the can.
A represents the can, which may be of the ordinary shape. 1 7
On the inside of the cover of the can is secured the hook B, fig. 2, on which is hung the shank G, by means of an eye, D.
To this shank are attached the vessels E, by means of the arms a.
These vessels may be made in any desirable shape, those represented being tubular. They may also ,be
one or more in number, and are for the purpose of holding ice, which may be packed in them with any of the materials used in packing ice. The lids b are then secured thereon.
The can is filled with milk, which, coming in contact with the, cold surface of the ice-vessels, cools wit, and prevents its becoming injured by the heat,
which is often the case when being transported, the
agitation and heat, consequent on moving the can to any distance in warm weather, often materially injuring the milk. But, by this arrangement, the agitation brings the milk in contact with the outside of the ice-vessels, and efiectually cools it.
These vessels can bedetached from the can, which is independent of them, when the milk-can may be used as any common milk-can, without any of the devices for holding the ice-vessels being retained in the can.
I am aware that coolers or ice-vessels placed in a milk-can have been used, and I do not broadly claim the use of such coolers; but
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ice-vessels E E, with the shank O and arms a a, hook B, on the lid of can A, and eye D, all constructed and adapted to the uses and purposes, in the manner substantially as described.
