ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to window-cleaning devices; and the invention has for its object to provide a novel attachment for streetf cars for cleaning the window in front of the motorman or operator of the car,`said deviceembodying positive and reliable means that can beleasily actuated by the motorman or operatorvof the car to remove frost, snow, or water that would tend to interfere with the transparency of the window. l
Another object of this invention is to provide a window-cleaning device that can be any desired time.
readily used upon the windows of various kinds of vehicles or cars, such as Pullman cars, the device being constructed whereby it can be easily and quickly manipulated at 'With the above and other objectsin view,
which will more readily appear as the inven-A tion is better understood, the Same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings forming artof this specification, like numerals of re erenc'e designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in whichr Figure 1 is a front elevation of a street-car equipped 4with my improved Window-clean ing device.' Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line a; of Fig. ,1. 3 is a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation of a portion of a car, illustrating one of the guides.4 Fig.5 1s a lperspective view of a portionof one of the guides. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a portion of a movable rod used in connection with the Window-cleaning device. Fig. ' 7 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 8 isa vertical sectional view of a portion of vmy improved device, illustrating a slight. modification in the construction thereof; and F 9 is an elevation of a window equipped with my improved device, illustrating a lmodified form of actuating means.
to its normal To put my invention into practice, I provide the. side rails 1 of a window 2 with vertlcally-disposed channel-shaped guldes 3,
wthese' guides bein secured to the outer sides n the guides are mounted of the rails 1. movable blocks 4, carrying a transverse rod 5, in which is secured a scraper 6 or piece of resilient cleansing or abrasive material', vas rubber, metal, carborundum, felt, or leather.
The scraper is adapted to engage the Window 2,"and in order that the entire surface of the window may be cleaned of any foreign matter thatvwould tend to obliterate a person s vision through thel same I provide `novel means-for moving the scraper over the Window. lAttached to the blocks 4 are ilat bandsprings 7, normally maintained under tension in a suitable casing 8, carried upon the inner side of the window 2, said springs passing through slots 9, formed'in the rails 1 at the upper ends ofthe guides 3. 'The fiat-band? springs 9 are adapted to retain the scraper at the top of the window 2, and to lower .the
same I attach cables 10 to the blocks 4, said cables passing over sheaves 11, carried bythe sill of a window, and extending through the framework 12 beneath the window and having their ends connected together upon the inner side ofthe Window, whereby a person pulling-upon.- the cableslO can easily lower the scraperto Iremove foreign matter from the window 2.- U on releasing the cables the band-springs 9, W 'chhave been placed under tension, areadapted to return the sera per d position at Vthe top of thewin- The application of the device vjust de,-Y scribed to a street-car is clearly illustrated 1n Figs.. 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, and in, this instance the operator, or motorman of a car manipulates the device to remove frost, snow, or water that mayadhere to the window 2 therefrom.
In Fig. 8 of the drawingsI have illustrated a slight modification of myimproved window-cleaning device wherein the cables 10 are dispensed with and the rails 1 provided IOO with slots 14. The blocks 4 are provided v with rearwardly-extending arms 15, which protrude through' the slots 14. and are pro.
videdwith handles 16. It is only necessary to grip the handles and move them toward the bottom of the .Window to cleanse the same, thei'lat band-springs 9 returning the scraper to its normal posit1on. v d
A still further modification is illustrated 1n IIO Fig. v9 of the drawings, wherein I dispense i `with the handles 16 and provide the blockarms a with cables 10a, said cables being attached to drums 17, revolubly mountedin the framework of the window. Each drum carries a pinion 18, adapted to mesh with a movable rack 19, said rack being carried in guides 20 and provided with a handle 21, which` is moved to rotate the drums 17 and wind the cables thereon. In this manner the scraper can be drawn downwardly over the window similar to the cables 10 o r the handles 16 where used. The construction shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings is particularly adapted for Pullman cars o r vehicles where `neat window-xtures are necessary.y It is obvious that the windoweframework must be provided with a horizontal slot to permit of the handle 21 rotruding therethrough, the slot being of sircient lengthto allow the handle to be moved therein to lower thel scraper ofvmy improved device. v
Such changes in the size, proportion, and minor details of construction as are permissible by the appended claim may be resorted to wlthout departing from the -spirit and scope of the invention.
What'l claim, and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent, is In a window-cleaning device, the combinasaid rod, and means connected to said slideblocks foriactuating the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afflx my Signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I ROBERT J. CLARKE. Witnesses s MAX H. SRoLovITz,
A. J. Tarea.
