' Be it known that I, WILLIAM P'. BETTEN- DORF, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swing-Motion Trucks, of which the following is a full, clear,
and'ez ract description.
Hretofore .the endsof the bolsters of swing-motion trucks were suspended from the transom at points between the side frames thereof,- and the conseguence of this construction was to lace the weight upon the 'up'per arches of t e sideframes and create a tendency in the latter to tilt inward.
My invention has for its object the distribution'of the weight of the swing-bolster and its load equally upon each side of the side frames and the transferring of the point of suspension of the bolsterfrom the transom to said side frames by novel means that cause the-bolster to rise during its sidewise movement in either direction always in a plane parallel to the ball of the rails without disturbing'the center of gravity of the carbody and .so that the repressive effect of the entire weight of the load will be felt equally throughout the length of the bolster during the displacement thereof from its normal po- I larly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the side frames of my improved car-truck, which preferably consists of anu'ppe r arch, a lower arch, and two centrally-disposed columriguides, all cast in onepiece. Just above the central opening a of these side frames theupper arch has projecting laterally therefrom corresponding longitudinallyrdisposed open bearings 12 b for the upper parallel horizontal portions of journals'cr of a double link C. This link consists of a continuous loop of bar particumetal, which midway its lengthis bent back over itself, so that the ends (constituting the said journals 0) are brought near together, and the bends form loops d dyin which are seated-the ends of the pivot-bar D,.from which the platform E, supporting the bolstersprings ee, is suspended. These elliptical springs 6 support the ends of the bolster .G substantially as shown and are preferred especially for passenger-car trucks. Coil-springs or other forms of springs might be substituted in their place, however. In the drawings bolster G is shown as being made of cast-iron and as. having a truss shape between the inside springs, with solid ends extending out through the center openin ofthe side frames. .These ends are provi ed on either side of the side frames with stop-lugs h h, located atsuch distance apart as to permit the bolster to have a limited lon- "e'ment-in either direction-bein contact withathe outer edges of theopen bearings b b.
H The sills of the central opening a of the side frames are preferably flanged laterally and provided with a longitudinal groove therein which forms a seat j for the transverse tenon 7c, projecting down from the ends of the spring-plank 7c and produced by making a transverse depression in the upper surface of said plank, substantially as shown. These transversedepressions thus made form sockets for the shanks of transverse stop-bars I, that project up under the center of the platform E between lugs 22 e, depending from the under side of said platform. Besides the connection supplied by the spring-plank I prefer to connect said side frames at suitable o'ints between the bolster and the journa -boxes by transoms J J. The ends of these 'transoms are provided with circular 'trunnions m m, from. the ends of which lugs m project diametrically opposite pins m therethrough. This feature, however, is notess'ential, although Iprefer their use.

I do not desire to be confined to the exact construction of all of the elements and parts of'my invention'as hereinbefore set forth, as it is obvious they can be modified and changed without departing from the spirit of my invention, as indicated in the statement contained in the first part of this specification. All such changes, therefore, or modifications I desire to be understood as contem lating within the scope of my invention.
