Specification of Letters Patent.
:atenten .Aprn 2, 1907'.
Application tiled May 1,1905. Serial No. 258,211.
My invention relates to inea-ns for fporting a music-.roll in a mechanical me al instrunient or mechanical player for :isical instruments.
It provides a coupling device vul feby a roll having hollowrends may be f y:stably supported between the ends of th.Il oll-sup porting shafts on the instrument.
it is particularly adapted tor usewith a new torni oi music-roll invented by me and for which l have iiled a copending application of even date herewith, which ap plieation has received Serial No. 258,210, also No. 282,660, iiled `Qctooer 13, 1905. in this application the roll is holt', ,or at ieast has circular recesses at its ends, the bead or flange which forms the margin of said recess at one end er" the roll being preferably notched or recessed for engagement with a cooperating drivingelutch member, by which it may Abe engaged with 'the driving-shaft for reivinding the roll.
in the drawings, Figure l represents so much of a mechanical musica-l instrument as is necessary to show my invention, together with the music-roll and my novel supports. and 3 are inner end views ot the two px orts shown in Fig. i. F ig. 4 isa longitudinal section, on a larger scale, ot' parts shown at the right end ofthe roll, Fig. l`
i d gnat/es the driving-shaft et' a mechanl, min cal'instruinent, shown as provided 'with non-circular axial recess l1 at its free end adapted to receive the non-circular pin of the crdinaijr music-roll. 12 designates the sproiY telic-in, by which the shaft-3 is driven 'when the music-sheet is rcwound on the roll. 2 designates an idler-shaft also pro vided with an ii recess 2i tor receiving the pin of the ordinary music-roll. The idlershaft is free to longitudinal movement through the partition or 1looard 3 and is provided with a spi'i g 2i l to insure its return to its operative position to hold the rollsupports pressed toward each other and wi th a pin :22 moving in a slot 3l .tor purposes for- States, and a resident eign to the present invention and incidentally to assist in maintaining it in its proper relative position.
4 designates :tunisie-roll, havingend llanges 41 and tubular sleeves 42, having outturned flanges or beads 43 engaging over the inner edges of the flanges 4l, one oi the heads 43,
that shown at the right ol Fig. l, being provided 'with a notch or recess 44, tlieifunction ot' which will hereafter appear. ,A
5 designates one of my roll-supports, provided at one end with a circular portion`5l, adapted to engage in the end of the sleeve 42 and center and support the roll 4. Adjacent the portion 51 is a laterally-extending ilange orriin 52, having a recess 53 adapted to engage over the bead 43 on the sleeve 42 and having a tooth 54 ior engagement in the recess 44 in 'the head. At the other end oi.' the socket or support 5 is a recess-55, adapted to iit smoothly-over the end ot the shaft l. A set-screw 5G passes through the 'wail of the recess 55 and serves to lock the support 5 onto the end of the shaft 1.
The support G (shown at the left end of the roll in the drawings, Fig. i) has centering portion ol, adapted to enter the end et sleeve 42, a llange or riinGZ, adapted to bear against the head 42S et the sleeve, ey recess (i3, adapted to i'it over the end of the shaft-2, and a set-screw 64, annpled to engage withthe shaft and positively loci; the soclict or snpport 6 in position. is shown, the ilanged portion #52 oi" the support o is rotatable onv the hody portion, the. two heihg engaged hy the pin 65. z
The operation and function of the device will he clearly seen from an inspection et the drawings. i t is obvidus that the relatively short roll 4' would not extend the entire tence between the ends ot the shafts and Neither is it provided with centering-pin to enter the recesses .li and in the ends oi these shafts. it is, however, lsuitably cen-- tered and supported-6. g., hy the engagen *nent in its recessed ends of the portions 5l and 61 of the supports 5 and (i, respectivelyand is positiveiy driven hy the engagement of the tooth on the suplport 5 with the recess 44 in the head 43 of t ie sleeve 42 at one end of the roll. It is obvious;` that certain mechanical IOC changes 'may be made in my flavio@ witliool: flopaiing 'from the spii'i of the imention.
