Specification of Letters Patent.
AWNING- Patented Marc-h 26, 1907.
Application filed June 19,1905. Serial No. 265.944.
To all wir/ont t may concern:
Be it known that we, PHILIP WALGER and 4l/VILLIAM WALGER, citizens ef theV United States residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ofllinois, have jointly invented certain new andiisul Improvements in Awnings, ofv which the following isa speciiicaton.
Our invention relates to that class of awni Us adapted to'be adjusted to different positions and to be stretched ti frhtlyin any desired adjusted position and having av lower portion adjustable to any desired incline and adapted to be held tightly stretched while in any adjusted position.
It relates particularly tothe means for adj listing the lower portion of the awning to the f desired incline and for tightly stretching the 'awning in any desired adjusted position, by
positively holding the awningagainst downward movement and stretching it by means of braces, and to the means for enabling the awning-supporting braces or arms to be raised and lowered with the awning into and out of operative position.
The principal object of our invention is to provide a simple, economical, and eflicient awning. A
A further o'bject of the invention is to provide an awning adapted to serve as a curtain when desired and having when in lowered operative position an inclined lower portion adjustable to different lengths and provided with means fortightening the awning and holding it at a tension and for adjusting it to diil'erent inclines.
A Jfurther object is ,to provide means for enabling the :mining-supporting braces to be A raised out of the way when the awning is raised and lowered with the awning and etliciently held in operative position.`
A further object is to enable the awning to be stretched as tightly as possible by providing a positive means for holding it against downward movement and stretching it means of braces. i
Other and further objects of the invention will appear from an examination ol the drawings and the following description and cla-iin.
The invention consists in the features, combinations, and details ol` construction` hereinafter described and claimed.
ln th(` accompnn ving drawings, `Figure l is a sectional elevation oi' an awning constructed in accordance with our improvements; Fig. 2, da fragmentary sectional plan view taken on line 2 of Fig. 1, showing the roller and its winding wheel or pulley, Fig. 3, an enlarged perspective view in detail showinor the manner of mounting the pivoted braces or stretching the awning and holding the slidably-mounted braces in operative position; Fig.` fl, an enlarged sectional planA`- view in detail taken on line 4- of-Fig. 1, showing the manner of slidingly mounting vthe awning-supporting arms or braces in the vertical slbots; Fig. 5, a perspective view of one of theA end caps for the vertically-slotted members; Fig. 6, an enlarged detail, partly in section, showing the connectionA between the awning-supporting braces and hollow rod whichconnects them with the awning; and Figt 7 an enlarged view in elevation of the catch for positively holding the cord by which the awning is operated.
4In constructing an awning in accordance with our improvements we provide a body portion a, which may be of canvas or similar material, having its upper end secured to a roller b, which is rotatably mounted by. means of brackets c at the opposite ends thereof in a window-casing d on the outside of the window-frame, as shown in Fig. l. The roller is provided `with a sheave-pulley or winding-Wheel e, having an annular slot*` in its periphery between flanges f and g, adapted to receive the operating-cord h and permit it to be -wound thereon in lowering the awning and unwound in raising it. A catch i, having: a securing-cam portieri y', is pivotally mounted by means of a pivot-pin k and bracket Z upon the window-casing near the bottom of the window, so as to securely and removably hold the awnin' -operatirlg cord between the cam portion ot the catch and the base portion m.
`An awning-supporting brace "n, having ratchet-teeth o upon its upper edge, is mounted at each side of the awning. Each of ythese braces has its inner end slidably and pivotally mounted and its outerend secured to the lower endof the curtain. To accomplish this, the inner end of each of these braces 1s provided with a pivot p, which extends slidably into a vertical slot of a slotted member formed by a strip of sheet ,metal l1, hav-l ing its opposite edges folded, fso as to form flanges s and t, adapted to receive the pivot of the awning-supporting arm slidably therebeturen, suoli pivot being held slidably in place by means of a head or inner plate u on IOO 'de of the slot, 'which forms shoulders or guiding the :wiring-supportrig eroi in its upwertl emol dowi'iyvirtl movements emi for holding it seee.1rely,"iu pleeg. inthe slot. The 5 yslot members faire seeureci te the Window-easing 1oy heens of top miflfliottom eid plates or 'pot/lieto e, lim/ing vperfeteftifms 'sw for reoeiyd suitable screws .for lioldiogeuolr poolets iu position and .lie/ing poe-liet portions y for ei the metallic strip or slot member. 'dole screws or rive-ts 2 pleoeflet irithroughout the slotted. member end serve also to lrolcl it securely in place.
transverse rod. 3 is mounted in braoiiets so sif e oi" the stimmig tra' syereely thereof et or meer its center when the ewr'siug is irl low'erefl m ation. e. poiro sta'etcliinw reees f eeefi zo er.. are. their upper ends laiyoteliy mounted by memos of zt pivot 7, vmioli extends through per. .oretefl lug portions 8 o? the Irletellie slot members. lilie'outer swingingendo' these stretoliiugybmees vure euch provided with ein' 5*, adapted toeuter the spec-es between eno". engage the teeth of the owning-supportl foresee.
