NAIL-FULLER.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ADOLPH P. SCHNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ioag, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nail-Fullers, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a nail-puller embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of said device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the jaw portion of the device, the casing being broken away. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 g and Fig. 5 is aview, similar to Fig. 3, of amodified form of my invention.
This invention relates to nail-pullers, and one of the objects of my invention is to provide a nail-puller which 'will extract a nail vwith very little exertion on the part of the operator.
Another object of my invention is to provide a nail-puller which will extract a nail without bending it out of shape.
To this end I have devised'a device of the character described having a spring-actuated ram or driver-barwhich at one blow will force the gripping-jaws of the device into the material in which the nail is located, said device being also provided with a heel portion located adjacent the jaws, so that by rocking the device on this heel portion as a fulcrum the jaws will be caused to grip the nail, a further rocking movement of said device causing the nail to be extracted. Preferably said device is also provided with a movable member located some distance from the grippingjaws, which member can be swung into operative position after the nail has been startec or drawn out a short distance, and this member then acts as the fulcrum on which the device is rocked, so that the nail will be extracted without bending it.
Vhile I have herein shown the preferred embodiment of my invention as consisting of a nail-puller, it should be understood that the spring-actuated ram or driver-bar constituting part of the nail-puller could be used for other purposes 'without departing from the spirit of my invention-such, for example, as imparting a blow to a chisel, stamppunch, &c.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates the casing in which the gripping-jaws 2 and 3 are mounted, the upper end. of said casing being formed on the arc of a circle. The jaw 2 is rigidly held in place by rivets 4 and a lug 5, which extends between shoulders formed on the casing, and the jaw 3 is pivotally connected to the casing by a stud or pin 6, as shown in Fig. 3.
A lever 7 for actuating the aw 3 is pivotally connected to the casing at 8, and the shank 9 of said lever projects into the lower end of a tube 10, which forms part of thehandle of the device, the handle portion and gripping-j aw portion of the device vbeing held together by a pin 11, which is carried by the tube 10 and extends through an elongated y slot 12 in the shank of the lever 7, thereby permitting a slight movement of the handle portion relatively to -the gripping-jaw portion, so that when the handle portion is moved downwardly quickly the lower end of the tube 10 willimparta sharp blow to a shoulder on the lever 7, and thus cause the jaws to sink slightly into the material in which the' nail is embedded. A curved shoulder 7 a is formed on said lever, and this shoulder bears on the upper end of the casing, so that a blow imparted to the shank of said lever will be transmitted through the casing to the jaws mounted therein. The casing in which the gripping-jaws are mounted is provided with a heel portion 13, having an extended bearing-surface, and, as shown in the drawings, the front end of this heel portion is located very close to the jaws, so that very little exertion is required to extract the nail, the device being swung on this heel as a fulcrum during the operation of drawing out the nail. The heel portion is curved upwardly, and pivotally connected at 14, to the rear end thereof, is a yoke-shaped member 15, the`pivotal connection of this member 15 being located some distance above the bearing-surface of the heel portion 13'.
The jaw 3 is provided with an upwardlyprojecting curved arm 16, which engages its actuating-lever 7 at a point above its ivot, and the arm ofsaid jaw is held norma y in engagement with the lever 7 by means of a flat spring 17, connected to the upper face of the heel-piece 13 and engaging a slot 1S, formed in the jaw 3.

The tube 10, which forms part of the 11o handle of the device, is telescoped withina sleeve 19', which also constitutes part of the handle, and l have herein designated this part 19 an actuating-sleeve, as it is employed for storing up power in the spring which actuates the ram or driver-bar. ram or driver-bar 20 is mounted inside of the tube 10 and projects upwardly into the actuating-sleeve 19, as shown in Fig. 2, and said ram is provided with an elongated slot 21, which is deepest at its lower end and has a pivotally-mounted doO 22 located therein. When the parts of the device are in their normal positions, as shown in Fig. 2, this dog engages the beveled upper end of the sleeve 10, a spring 23 being employed for forcing the dog` outwardly.
A coiled sprin@P 24 surrounds the upper end of the ram 20 and is connected thereto by a screw 25, and the lower end of said spring is connected to the actuating-sleeve by an inwardly-projecting screw 26 in the sleeve, which extends into an eye in the end of the spring. The actuating-sleeve is also provided with a tripping-pin 27, which extends into the slot 21 in the ram, and relative rotative movement of the tube 10 and actuatingsleeve is prevented by means of a lug 28,
which extends into an elongated slot 29 inthe tube 10, said lug being formed on a plate 30, which is connected to the outer face of the actuating-sleeve by a screw 31. When the actuating-sleeve is moved downwardly, it is obvious that the spring 24 will be put under tension, the ram being prevented from moving downwardly with the sleeve as its dog engages the upper end of the tube 10; l/Vhen the actuating-sleeve has reached nearly the limit of its downward movement, the tripping-pin carried thereby will engage the dog 22 and force it away from the end of the tube 10, the spring 24 then operating to force the ram downwardly, so that it strikes the end of the shank of lever '7 a quick powerful blow, which causes the gripping-jaws to be sunk i'nto the wood or material in which the nail is located. The operator then rocks the handle portion of the device to cause the lever 7 to engage the arm of jaw 3 and force said aw toward the jaw 2 to grip the nail, and a further rocking movement on the heel 13 as a fulcrum causes the nail to be started. The member 15 is then swung into operative position, as shown in Fig. 3, and the connecting-pin 14 between this member and the heel portion then becomes the fulcrum on which the device is rocked, so that the nail will be extracted without bending it, due to the height at which this fulcrum is located.
ln Fig. 5 I have shown a slightly-modilied form of my invention in which the jaw 3', that is located nearest the heel-piece 13', is rigid and the cooperating movable aw 2 is The solid provided with teeth 33, which mesh with teeth 34 on the actuating-lever 7.
If desired, a coiled expansion-spring could be substituted for the tension-spring 24, (shown in Fig. 2,) the upper end of said expansion-spring being connected to the top of the actuating-sleeve and the lower end of said spring being connected to the ram. The operation of the device would be the same, however, if it were provided with a spring of this character, the downward movement of the actuating-sleeve compressing the spring, so that when the dog was tripped the expansion of the spring would force the ram downwardly.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A nail-puller comprising a casing having its upper end formed on the arc of a circle and provided with a rigid and a movable jaw, a lever pivotally connected to the casing for actuating said movable jaw, a curved shoulder on said lever which bears on the upper end of the casing, a heel-piece connected tol the casing and located close to the jaws, and a ram for imparting a blow to the end of said jawactuating lever; substantially as described.
2. A nail-extractor comprising a casing lhaving a rigid and a movable jaw mounted therein, a lever pivotally connected to said casing at a point above the pivot of said movable jaw, an arm on said movable jaw which engages the lever at a point above the pivot which connects said lever to the casing, a fulcrum-piece carried by the casing and arranged very close to the jaws, and a ram for imparting a blow to the end of said lever for forcing the jaws into the material in which the nail is located, substantially as described.
3. A nail-puller comprising a casing having ICO its upper end formed on the arc of a circle and provided with a rigid jaw and a heelpiece, a movable jaw pivotally connected to the casing and arranged between said rigid jaw and heel-piece, said movable jaw being provided with an upwardly-extending arm, a lever pivotally connected to said casing and being adapted to engage the upwardly-projecting arm on the movable jaw to actuate said jaw, a curvedshoulder on said lever which bears on the upper end of the casing, and a ram for imparting a blow to the end of said jaw-actuating lever; substantially as described.
