To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IARRY J. GEURINK, a citizen of the United States of America, resid ing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop and Waste Cocks; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stop and waste cocks.
The object of this invention is to provide a stop and waste cock which can be cheaply manufactured, easily assembled, and having an arrangement of parts which will effectually prevent the entrance of dirt or other foreign material which would impede the operation of the cock.
My invention, therefore, consists in the features of construction and combination of parts as described in the specification, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central section of a cock embodying my invention, showing the valve-plug in position to shut off water flowing in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, showing the valve-plug in position to shut off water flowing in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 1, with parts broken away. Fig. 5 is a top plan with parts broken away and the cap removed.
Again referring to the drawings, 1 represents the shell of an ordinary stop and waste cock, having internally-screw-threaded openings 2 and 3, into which the pi peseotions are screwed, and also a drain-opening 4 and a valve-plug opening 5. The shell 1 is provided with the usual neck portion 6 where the valve-plug enters. The outer surface of the neck 6, near its upper end, is squared, forming flat faces 7, 8, 9, and 10, and below the squared portion is formed an annular flange or shoulder 18.
The valve-plug 11 is at all points circular in cross-section, and in the upper end thereof is formed the usual socket 12 for receiving the end of the handle or key 13, which is preferably secured therein by a screw 14. In. the valve-plug 11 is formed a passage-way or opening 15, through which the water flows when the valve is open, and a vent-opening 16. On top of the neck 6 is arranged a cap which serves both as a dust-guard and also as a means for limiting the rotation of the valve-plug. This cap consists of a ring or collar 17, which is arranged to encircle the upper part of the neck 6. The collar 17 is provided with an annular inwardly-extending flange 23, which closely embraces the upper end of the valve-plug 11 and forms the top of the cap. 011 the inner face of the ring 17 is formed a flat surface or shoulder 19, which is arranged to register with one of the fiat faces on the neck 6, according to the position in which the cap is placed on said neck 6, and thereby prevents the cap from turning on the neck. On the inner face of the ring 17 are also arranged stops 20 and 21, and on the valve-plug 11 is formed a lug 22, which is arranged to travel between the stops 20 and 21, and the movement of the valve-plug is thereby limited to a quarter-turn.
In Fig. 1 the cap is shown in the proper position to allow the valve-plug to be operated so as to control the water-supply when entering at the opening 3 and the shoulder 19 on the ring 17 is registering with the face on the neck 6. Now if it is desired to control the water-supply when entering through the opening 2 the cap is removed and replaced so that the shoulder 19 registers with the face 7 on the neck 6.
It will be readily seen that the cap and the flange 18 together form a boX which completely incloses the stops 20 and 21 and the lug 22, thereby preventing dirt or other material from lodging between the stops and the lug and restricting the operation of the valve.
What I claim is-- A stop and waste cock comprising a valvecasing having a neck portion with two flat faces, a valve-plug arranged to fit into said casing and having a cylindrical portion projecting above the neck portion of the valvecasing, a cap having a circular opening to receive the cylindrical part of the valve-plug and arranged to extend down over the neck portion of the valve-casing and having a single flat face on its interior surface arranged to register with one of the fiat faces on the neck portion, stops formed on the interior surface of said cap, and a lug formed on said valve-plug arranged to travel between the stops on said cap.
