Specification of Letters Patent.
'Patented March 12 1907'.
Implication filed January 24:, 1906, Serial No. 297,644:
To [all iz/1,0711, 211$ may ooneern:
Be it known that l, EDWD; "l. (iltl')ll.\' FIELD, a ('illZLll of the Lniled States, and a the interior of the tube smooth where the some is used as conduit for the passage of resident of lx'ianiesla, in (lie county oi Sullivan audbtate on" New Ytrk, have invented a certain. new and useful improvement in I Tubing, ((Tase B,) of which the following is a specification.
The invention concerns generally that type of tubing employed for inelosing: eleetrie c" nf duetors, either conduit or armor thereior, or for the transmission of a fluid agent-- such, for example, as steam.
The object is to provide a simple and -dt1ra ole structure which. may readily l'ie made in large quantities, which shall be sulliuently flexible to meet the requirements of practical of the outer series, and whi ,use, which sl all possess maximum strength Whether straight or bent, and which slall when used conduit for eleetric wires and the like present a smooth interior, peri'nitling i the ready and easy fishing of the wiresl therctllrough.
In a preferred form of the invention lv con struct tle tubiiig of two concentric tubes, each made of a orally-formed strip, preferably of metal. revious to the spiraling operation each of tltese strips is laterally eurved by any suitable means-such, for exam le, as the die-rolls described and illustrated in L tters Patent 35o. 6.itl,5(l2, heretofore gram-ed to me. As a result of this lateral curving the stri from wlzieh the outer series of spirals is formed is provided at each edge with a llai'ii e, one turned outwardly and the other inwardly, so that the successsive spirals formed from such stripshall interlock but be capable of the requisite degree of movement relatively. to each other to produce the desirable feature of flexibility. Vlithin the tube so formed, and preferably as the sanie is formed, lplace another tiuoe, also. comprising SUK'COSSIVQ sp rals of a single strip of metal. This strip also may be curved laterally; but as the same is spiraled its edges instead of overlapping, as do the edges of the f spirals oi' the outer tube, are brought into alinement in substantially the same plane,
thereby forming butt-joints. The spirals of 2 the inner series immediately e preferably the same may not when the tube as a WlIOlC is flexed or bent move a substantial distance tounderlie these y I ries ofs lrals ll and (Z are formed simultaneward or from each other they ma readily E move out of their normal plane, sti l leaving the wires.
A preferred form in which the invention may be employed is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which ligure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section. Fig. 3 is a portion. of the strip from which the spirals oi the outer tube are formed, and Fig. 4 is a portion of the strip from which the inner tube formed.
Referring to these drawings, A designator the strip from which the spirals B B of the outer tube are formed. By rneans, for example, of the die-rolls above referred to this is curved between its lateral edges, preferably as shown in Fig. 3, being provided with an inturned flange 0, at one edge, the outwardly-bowed portion a the substantially flat portion on, and the outwardly-projecting flange a at the lateral edge opposite the in turned flange 0/. This stri 18 by means of suitable bending or win ing -1nechanism formed into a series of suceessivespirals B B, each spiral overl'a ping an adjacent s iral an d the inturned flange (1 of one spire eoaeting with the outwardly-turned fla e a or" tile next adjacent spiral. Asthis spiraling operation proceeds 1 preferably pass between such flanges a suitable gasket which may be of wire provided with an elastic or eom pressiblc covering 0 of rubber, fabric, or other desired material;
As will be readily understood, the outer spirals B B are capable of movement, within predetermined limits, not only toward and from each other, but also out of-the normal plane thereof.
D designates the strip from {which the spirals r1 d or" the inner tube are fortined. This strip may, il desired, be spiraled in the flat; but I prefer to term the same with an outwardly-bowed portion (1 and a substantially flat portion (.1 the former underlying the outwardly-bowed portion (1, of one of the outer spirals B and the latter underlying the sul'istantially llat portion a of such spiral. In the spiraling operation, during which preferably both the outer and the inner seously, t ie spiralsof the outer series are made to overlie those of the inner series and are interlocked in the manner above stated, while those of the inner series are butt-jointed, the
