JOHANNES CHRISTIAN JOHANSEN, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMIRK MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed October 4 1906. Serial No. 337,363.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHANNEs CHRISTIAN J CHANSEN, a subject of the King or Denmark, residing in Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented new and useful Improvements in Massage Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
. My invention relates to an adjustment device for vibration massage apparatus, the effect of which is regulated by varying the relative position of the rotating weights placed at the ends of two shafts, one of which is hollow and incloses the other.
The invention is shown in the drawing, Figure 1 of which represents a longitudinal section of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 of which is a face view or' the disk connected with the hollow shaft.
The apparatus consists of a casing a, provided with a butt-end or, adapted to be held against the part to be massaged, a bottom I), and an interior intermediate plate 0. bottom and plate are provided with bearings for a hollow shaft d, one end of which is provided with a rotating weight 6 and the other end with a disk g, having a series of circularly-placed recesses or holes f. Within the shaft d is a second shaft it, provided with a rotating weight h. On the exterior end of this shaft is fixed a projection or pin Z, which is adapted to be pressed into one of the holes f in the disk g, Fig. 2, by means of a spiral spring m. It may be found desirable to number the holes f in order to facilitate the adjustment of the massage force required.
The apparatus is set in operation by drawing a bow having a flexible string across the cylindrical part 72. of the shaft 76 below the knob 0, the shafts d and it being caused thereby to rotate. The bow-string may be given a turn around the part n, if desired, to pro- The buttend a of the casing a is held against the part to be operated upon. It is obvious that the force of the massage may be regulated by adjusting the weights in relation to each other, so that the closer the two weights are placed to each other the more powerful will be the massage, while the massaging effect of the apparatus will cease when the two weights are in positions diametrically opposed to each other.
It is to be understood that the rotating movement of the weights may be effected in a different manner from that above described, any suitable means for producing such movement being satisfactory.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In massage apparatus, the combination of a part adapted to contact with the body, a plurality of rotating weights adapted to vibrate such part, and means for varying the relative positions of such weights and holding them in such position so as to regulate their vibrating effect, such means including a projection connected to one of said weights, and a part having a series of recesses connected with the other of said weights.
2. In massage apparatus, the combination of a part adapted to contact with the body, a plurality of rotating weights adapted to vibrate such part, a hollow shaft carrying one of said weights, a second shaft within such hollow shaft carrying the other of said weights, one of said shafts having a series of recesses, and the other having a projection adapted to enter said recesses, and a spring adapted to permit adjustment of said projection in the several recesses and to hold such parts in engagement.
3. In massage apparatus, the combination of a part adapted to contact with the body, a plurality of rotating weights adapted to vibrate such part, a hollow shaft d carrying one of said weights, a shaft is within the shaft (1 carrying the other of said weights, a disk 9 having a series of recesses fixed to one of said shafts, a projection ZfiXed to the other of said shafts, and a spring m adapted to hold such projection in such recesses.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
