To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Swrr'r, Jr., of Bordentown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, I
whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of my invention to provide reciprocatory mechanism whereby a continuously-moving web may be intermittently operated upon without interrupting its progress.
. The form of my invention hereinafter described comprises a pair of opposed crossheads respectively connected with similar eccentrics and coupled to contemporaneously reciprocate in alinement in opposite direc tions normal to the plane of a moving web. Said cross-heads have an oscillatory movement substantially coincident with the longitudinal movement of said web and carry cutting and punching devices arranged for operation upon said web without interrupting its progress.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side elevation of a fragment of a machine conveniently embodying my improvements.

III and IV are detailed sectional views of the cross-heads; taken'on the line IV IV in Fig. II, showing)- the punching and cutting devices in their respectively inoperative and operative positions.
In said drawings the machine-frame comprises the side rails 1, the bearing-standards 2, and the hangers 3, supported by said rails. Said standards 2 comprise the bearings 4 for the main driving-shaft 5, which is provided with the gears 6 and 7 exterior to said bearings. A
The gear 6 is arranged to rotate in the direction of the arrow 'shown in Fig. I and to mesh with the gear 8, whose shaft 9 is jour,
naled in the bearings 10 in the standards 2 and provided with the gear 12. Said gear 6 also meshes with the gear 14, whose shaft 15 is journaled in the bearings 16 in the'hangers 3 and provided with the gear 17.
The gears 8 and 12 mesh with the idle gears 20, which ,are mounted on the studshafts 21 on the standards 2 and mesh with the pinions 22, whose shafts 24 are journaled in the bearings 26 in said standards 2. Said shafts 24 are provided with the wrist-plates 28, having the eccentric-pins 30 engaging the connecting-rods 31, to which the cross-head 32 is rigidly secured. I
The gears 14 and 17 mesh with the pinions 34, whose shafts 36 are j ournaled in the bearings 38 in the hangers 3 and provided with the wrist-plates 40, having the eccentric-pins 42 engaging the connecting-rods 41, to which the cross-head 44 is rigidly secured.
The cross-heads 32 and 44 are maintained in alinement by the guide-bars 45, which are rigidly secured to the connecting-rods 41 and are arranged to reciprocate in the slideways 47 in the connecting-rods 31, being prevented from displacement by the cleats 46 on the latter. The gear 7 meshes with the pinion 50, whose shaft 51 is j ournaled in the bearing-blocks 52, which are adjustably mounted in the housings 53, secured to the standards 2, vertical adjustment of said blocks being effected by rotation of the setscrews 54. Said shaft 51. is provided with the disk 55, arranged to cooperate with the disk 56 on the main shaft 5 in continuously rogressing the web 57 between the crosslieads 32 and 44, which are arranged, as above described, to periodically engage said web and travel therewith during such engagement. The travel of said cross-heads 32 and 44 with the web during their engagement is effected, as shown in Figs. I and IV, by the eccentrically=mounted pins 30 and 42, which travel concentrically around the axes of the respective shafts 24 and 36 in the direction 'of the arrows indicated in Fig. I, and therefore carry the connecting-rods 31 and 41 and their respective cross-heads 32 and 44 in the direction of'the travel of the web when in contact with said web, as shown in Figs. I and IV, and in the opposite direction when separated, as shown in Fig. III. .As best shown in Figs. III and IV, said cross-heads carry means arranged to cut and punch the web 57, respectively comprising the opposed blades 58 and 59, adjustably secured on'the respective cross-heads 32 and 44' by the setscrews 43, and the punching-dies 60, secured to the cross-head 32 and arranged to cooperate with the die-plates 62 on the crosshead 44.

from the blade 58 and punchingdies 60 to insure the, free movement of the web, and said plate 65 is mounted on the plungers 66, which reciprocate in the plunger-sockets 67 in the cross-head 32. Said plungers 66 are normally pressed outward by the coiled springs 68 in said sockets 67. Said springs abut against the shoulders 69 on the plungers 66, and the downward movement of the latter is limited by the pins 70, which extend from said plungers to encounter the cross-head 32. It may be noted that the punching'and cutting operations herein described are ao' complished by the relatively vertical reciprocation of the cross-heads without interrupting the progress of the web with which they travel when in engagement.
Although I find it convenient to employ the disks 55 and 56 to continuously progress the web 57 between the cross-heads 32. and 44, as above described; it is to be understood that such progressing means may be dispensed with and the web may be intermittently progressed by said cross-heads during the pressing period.
, I do not desire to limit myself tothe pre- 'ci'se details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention.
I claim L In a press, the combination with opposed cross-heads; of eccentrics arranged to oscillate said cross-heads; and, means on said cross-heads arranged to impress a web, substantially as set forth.

In a press, the combination with side frames; of eccentrics mounted to rotate in said frames; cross-heads carried by said eccentrics, arranged to intermittently impress .a moving Web, and to travel with said Web during said mnlf period; and, means carried by said cross-heads arranged to perforate said web, substantially as set forth.

Ina press, the combination with side frames; of eccentrics mounted to rotate in said frames; cross-heads carried by said eccentrics, arranged to intermittently impress amoving web, and to travel with said web during said impressing period; and, cuttingblades carried by said cross-heads arranged to sever said web, substantially as set forth.

In a press, the combination with side frames; of eccentrics mounted to rotate in said frames; cross-heads carried by said eccentrics, arranged to intermittently impress a moving web, and to travel with said web during said impressing period; web-cutting mechanism carried by said .crossheads; a stripper-plate arranged to free\the web from said cutting mechanism; plungers supporting said plate; and, springs tending to thrust said plungers, substantially as set forth.
9. In a press, the combination with side frames; of eccentrics mounted to rotate in said frames; cross-heads carried by said eccentrics, arranged to intermittently impress a moving web, and to travel with said web during said impressing eriod; web-cutting mechanism; a stripper-p ate arranged to free the web from said cutting mechamsm; plungers supporting said plate; springs tending to thrust said plungers, and, means arranged to limit the movement of said plungers, substantially as set forth.

In a press, the combination with eccentrics; of cross-heads carried by said eccentrics, arranged'to intermittently impress a moving web, and to travel with said web during said impressing period; a main driving-shaft; means connecting said eccentrics with said shaft; and, means operatively con nected with said shaft, arranged to continuously progress said web, substantially as set forth. a 4 11. 14. In a press, the combination with means arranged to continuously progress a web 3. of
alined cross-heads arranged to contemporaneously reciprocate vertically and hor zontally to intermittently impress said webland travel therewith during said impressing period, substantially as set forth.
15. In a pressfthe combination with means arranged to continuously progress a web; of ahned cross-heads arranged to contemporaneously reciprocate vertically in opposite di-- rections, and horizontally in the same direction, to intermittently impress said web and 3 travel therewith during said impressing pe- E riod, substantially as set forth.
16. In a press, the combination with means arranged to continuously progress a web; of opposed cross-heads; means on said crossheads arrangedto impress said web; means 3 coupling said cross-heads for reciprocation in l alinement in opposite directions normal to the plane of said web; and, similar eccentrics 5 respectively connected with said cross-heads, 2 arranged toreciprocate and oscillate them coincidently with the longitudinal movement of said web during the impressment of the latter, substantially as set forth.
