' .QWILLIAM:CRAWFORD, or BRADFORD,
a BOVAIRD COMPANY, A COPARTNERSI-IIP.
' GEARING,
To all whom it Hwy concern.
Be. it known that L'Wrntmm CRAWFORD, a
- citizen of the United States, residing at Bradanism which may be installed in a muchv .more economical manner than the machinery .mg or pulling the material out of -.:ie'well or lowering-it back again. such change:v as are" 2O 'rangement of parts'hereinafter described,
ford, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention re ates to improvements in pumping and hoisting machinery for use in connection with oil, gas, and waterwells; and the object of the invention is to devise a simple, durable, and eflici'ent formof mech-' ord narily employed and which will require but few changes to adapt it for either pumpnecessary being quickly and easily made.
With these and other objects in -view the invention comprises the construction and arand particularly set forth in the appended claims,
' The invention is illustrated-in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view-g Fig. 2, a side elevation; Figs. 3,4; and 5 are detail views.
Referring more articularly to these drawings, the numera 5 desi nates. a drivingshaft, to the cranclgf whic is connected the piston 6- o =-an or ary reci rocating engine 7, the shaft being gournaled iii a base8 of the ordinary or any. esired construction. The
shaft carries onone end the ordinary fly-- wheel 9 and on the opposite end a gear wheel or inion 10. This pinion 10 is encircled ata suitable distance by an internal stationary rack 11, which may convem'ently be carried by a disk or plate 12, which may be supportation of the engine or other conve 'ent art by means of braces 13' and forms it e bac of the gear-case, the stationary platejand the'annu-' a'r rack carriedthereby constituting, in effect, a gear-case having an open side, and
this open side is closed by a-rotary disk or plate 14, journaled upon the projecting end of the shaft. The rotary plate may be held from longitudinal movement on the shaft by any suitable means, such, for instance, as
Patented March? drivingshaft and also with the-internal Eta tionaryrack,
It will has be seen that as the drivingshaft isrota'ted by the engine the pinion 10 will rotate'the planet-gears 17, andas these planet-gears are in mesh with the stationary rack they will be caused to travel around the driving-shaft at a. r'nuch'reduced speed, car
rying with them the rotary plate or disk-14, upon which the are-'journaled. In order to utili zethe rotation of this plate 14 for either operating the pumping mechanism or the hoisting mechanism, I connect to the plate PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR removable and interchangeable parts in the I manner hereinafter described. The plate is provided with a-stud 19 for receivin the wrist-pin 20 of a pitman 21, connecte to a pumping-jack or walking-beam for operat ing the pump mechanism. The rotary disk.
has a hub. 23, over which is designednto be placed the tubular extension 24 of a drum 25, designed, to receive a hoisting-rope.
When the apparatus is to beused for. hoisting purposes,'the pi-tman and connecting wrist pin are removed, the drum extension insorted over the hub and secured in place b. bolts 26, and thus it will be seenthat wit these slight changes the apparatus is quickly adapted for lowering thepumping apparatus into the well or hoisting it therefrom. a
In order to relieve the strain from the bolts 26, the hub may be provided with'an integral key or lug 27, designed to engage a keyway in the tubular extension of the windmg- Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim is v 1. In combination, a driving-shaft, a stationary plate having an annular gen encircling the shaft and constituting agear-case with an open side, a disk journaled on the driving-shaft and clesing said open-side, a pinion on the driving-shaft'within thegear case, a lia-net gear ournaled on the, late within t e gear-ase and meshing with 0th said. pinion and rack, said rotary disk having a c- .:=ntrally-arranged I rejecting hub and an ec-v e'ntrically-arran ed boss arranged respectively for the attac ment of a winding-drum a; a wrist-pin, substantie. 1y as described.
-' 2; In combination, a driving-shaft, a sta- .tionary plate through whiehs'aid shaft pro-- jecits, said plate having an annular flange carroo ' flange fofming a gear-case, a pinion on the the part to be'cperated to said disk, substan- 1o driving-shaft within the gean-case, & rotary dlsk otatebly mounted on the driving-shaft and clcsmg the open side of said case, a.
i 5 planet-gear carried by said disk within the gear-cese'and meshing with said rack and.
pinion, removable cleats carried by said annular flange and overlapping the edgeof the disk, and means fc r detachably connecting tielly as described.
In testimony whe eof I aflix my signature inpresence of two' witnesses.
WILLIAM CRAWFORD.
