Be it known that I, LOUI's LABEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Briggsville, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Take- Up Mechanisms for Looms and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in looms, and more particularly to an attachment for a machine of this character by means of which the operator or weaver will be prevented from turning the take-up faster than its normal speed, and thereby increasing the number of yards woven at the expense of the weight and uniformity of the goods.
The object of the invention is to provide asimple and practical device of this character which will be very effective for the purpose intended and will not interfere with the operation of the loom.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 a portion of a loom, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment removed from the loom.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a portion of the frame of a loom, in which is mounted a shaft 2, carrying the usual take-up ratchet-wheel 3, and in which is also mounted the usual rock-shaft 4, which is operated by the lay of the loom. My attachment is operated from this rock-shaft 4 and comprises an arm 5, which is secured upon the same by means of a clamp or clip 6. The latter is formed integral with one end of the arm 5 and has its ends bolted upon the shaft 4, as shown at 7, or in any other suitable manner. The opposite end of the arm 5 is formed with intersecting slots 8 9 to respectively receive the lower end of a connecting-rod 10 and a pivot-bolt 11. The rod 10 has its lower end, which projects through the slot 8, formed with a series of apertures 12, through any one of which the pivot-bolt 11 may be passed. This pivot-bolt passes through the slot 9 and may be adjustably clamped therein, so that the length of the arm 5 may be varied as desired. The upper end of the connecting-rod 10 is adjustably secured to an oscillating guard 12, which is mounted upon the shaft 2 of the take up gear or ratchet. This guard 12 is in the form of a lever having a hollow body portion formed by a longitudinally-slotted top 13 and two parallel depending longitudinally slotted slides 14. The upper end of the rod 10 projects between the sides 14 and is pivoted upon a bolt or the like 16, which'isadjustably clamped in the longitudinal slots of the sides 14. Adjustably mounted in the top 13 is a clip or band 17, which is passed over the shaft 2 and has one of its ends formed with a reduced portion or neck 18 and a head 19. This reduced portion or neck projects through the slot 20 in the top 13 and is retained therein by the engagement of the head 19 with the bottom of said top. The opposite end of the clip or band 17 has an angularly-bent apertured portion 21, which is clamped upon the top 13 by a screw 22 passed through the slot 20 and into a clamping-b1ock 23, which is slidably engaged with the under face of the top 13, as shown inFig. 3. It will be seen that by means of this construction the guard or lever 12 is pivotally suspended from the shaft 2, and the length of its two arms or ends may be varied by adjusting the clip or band 17 upon the same. One end of the lever 12 is bent around the toothed edge of the gear 3, as shown at 25, so that as the lever is operated said bent portion will swing up and down over the edge of the take-up gear and prevent the weaver or operator from shifting the same by hand or with his knee. jjfiflkikzlfi The construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that when the loom is in operation the rocking of the shaft 4 will be imparted to the arm 5, and the latter, through the connecting-bar 10, will rock or oscillate the guard 12. The constant oscillation of the guard 12 will prevent the operator from tampering with the take-up gear, and thereby the speed of the same, to cause the loom to produce a greater amount of cloth at the expense of the weight and uniformity of the same.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a loom, a take-up mechanism, and an oscillating guard for said mechanism.
2. In a loom, a take-up gear, and a reciprocating guard for said gear.
3. In a loom, a take-up gear, and an oscillating guard for said gear.
4. In a loom, a take-up gear, a shaft, a swinging guard for said gear, and means for imparting the motion of said shaft to said,
guard.
5. In a loom, a take-up gear, a rock-shaft,
a guard mounted for oscillation adjacent to said gear, and operative connections between said guard and said rock-shaft.
' 6. In a loom, a take-up gear, a rock-shaft,
a pivotally-mounted guard-lever for said gear, an arm upon said rock-shaft, and a con nection between said lever and said arm.
7. In a loom, a take-up gear, an oscillatory guard for said gear, a rock-shaft, and adjustable connections between said shaft and said guard. I
8. In a 100m, a take-up gear, an adjustably-mounted oscillatory guard-lever for said gear, and means for operating said lever.
9. In a loom, a take-up gear, a pivot, a guard-lever for said gear, means for adjustably .mounting said lever upon said pivot, and means for operating said lever.
10. In a loom, a take-up gear, a pivot, a guard-lever for said gear, means for adjustably mounting said lever upon said pivot, and a driving connection adjustably connected to said lever.
