Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mai-ch 5, 1907.
Application lcd January 29,1906. Serial No` 298.303.
To all wil/077e it' may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON C. SPRAGUE, l and the perforations therein into the space of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Broeders, of which the fol- The object of'iny invention is to provide a broeder which is capable of being taken apart readily forcleansing purposes or repairs.
A further object is to provide a broeder in which it willl beiinpossible for the chicken to come in direct contact with a heated surface. A further Objectis toprovide a broeder in which the circulation oit' pure warm air through the hover is positively insured.
Otherobjects of the invention will appearfrom the following detailed description.
l The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, as is hercinafter described, and particularly pointed Aout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brooder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse `vertical sectional view oi the same.
In the drawing, 2 represents the walls'o'f the broeder supported upon suitable legs 3 and having areinovable covei 4.
o is the bottom of the broeder, having a central'opening 6, over which a drum 7, pref- 'erablycylindrical in form, is removably. arl ranged on a iiange 6.
The Walls of' this'drum 'at the top have a series of holes 7 and the .top of the drum 7 has avcap or dome 8,on
which a circularplate 9, forming the top of the hover, is centrally resting upon. clips ,10, provided on the top of the drum. .The plate 9 has suitable exhaust-holes 11, communicating with the interior of the brooder, and -a iiexible curtain 12 is suspended from the-said plate and depends to a point near the floor of the brooder and is provided with aseries ofV slits 13 to facilitate the passage of the chickens from the broeder-chamber to the space within the hover. The cover 4 is provided With suitable exhaust-openings 14, through which the foul air is discharged. `1
Beneath the `flooris a plate 15, and between said plate and floor are flues 16, communicating with the interior of the drum 7 and with the open air through ports 17 in said plate. The cool air entering the ports 1.7 flows up around and through the drum inclosed bythe liover-curtain. A flange 18 is mounted on the plate and vsupports an iniperforate drum 19, which projects lup into the drum -7 and is spaced i'roin the walls thereof` rlhe drum 19 is accessible after the drum 7 is removed and may also be detached for convenience in cleaning. A pipe 2() is carried by the plate 15 and extends up into the drum 19 and has anopen upper end cominunicating with the interior oi' said drum and an open lower end, into which the heating-lamp 21 is inserted. This lamp is mounted on a suitable track orl guide 22 and is adapted to be slipped in under the pipe 20, being limited in its movement by a stop 23,. so that no accurate adjustment of thelamp x is required/it being merely necessary to push it on the track as tar as 'it will go.
The lower end of the pipe has a cut-out portion 24 to permit the passage ofthe lamp.
A ilue communicates with the space inclosed by the lamp 18 and the drum 19 and leads out between the plate. 15 and the Iioor of the brooder to the open air. The heat oi the lamp will create a circulation through the pipe 2() and the druin 19 and out through the ers-and as` the outer drum cannot become .hot it will be impossible for the chickens to be injured through contact with a hot radiatingsurface. The circulation of air between the drums can be regulated so that the desired temperature can be obtained inthe broeder and a perfect system of heating and ventilatin'gsecuredyl Whenever desired, the cover of the broeder Ina be removed, the hover-plate 9 lifted, an convenient access had to the drums for r oo the purpose of cleaning off the soot which will accumulate thereon. l
I claim as my inventionn 1 In a broeder, the combination, with a casing having a floor provided with an opening therein, of a perforate drum mounted on said floor over said opening and spaced from the top of the broc er, a'lhover-plate supported above said'drum and spaced from the top and side Walls of the broeder, a curtain supported on said hover-plate and inclosing sai drum, an imperforate drum arranged within the opening in said floor and spaced from the Walls and top of -said first-named ,drum and having an exhaust or foul-air flue,
'means supporting said imperforate "drum,
facilitate the' cleaning of their interior surfaces, substantially as described.
.2. In a-brooder, thr combination, with a :casin having a floor `rovided withan openn inggt erein anda ange surrounding the persame,"of a drum having a closed top an forate side Walls and an open bottom fittin over said ange, a hoven late supporte above said drum and s ace from the top of the brooder and the sidewalls thereof and having a curtain inclosing said'drum, av late arranged beneath the iioor' of the broo er, a
"secondfiange mounted on said plate beneath the, opening in said iloor, an imperforate air inlet and said imperforate drum having a` drum fitting 'on said second flange and eX- tending u through the opening in said iior` into said' st-named drum and spacedtherefrom, and said perforatedrum having a coldfoul-air exhaust, a pi eprojecting up through said plate into said ipmperforate drum and a lamp arranged beneath said pipe and said drums being removably mounted on said 'u' y pipe. .f
4. The combination, with a 'brooder-'cas-j 'ing having a floor provided with an? opening projectin i iianges, whereby access may be had to their interior surfaces for cleaning purposes.
3. In a brooder,l the combination, With a casing having a 'floor provided with an opening therein and a flange inclosing said open- Y ing, of a perforate drum removably mountedon said ange, a plate arranged beneath said licor, a second flange/thereonl beneath the opening in said iioor, an imperforate drum removably mounted on said second flangeA vand projecting up through said opening into said perforate drum and spaced from the Walls thereof, said perforate drum having a cold-airintake`opening, and said imperio- `rate drum having a foul-air-exhaust iiuefa pipe projectin up into said imperforate drum, and a Ia mp arranged beneath said'v therein, of a p'erforate drum'ai'ranged over lsaid opening, clips `provided on the top'of vsaid drum, a hover-plate resting upon said clips and spaced from thetop of the broeder and-'having eX-h'austopenings and 'a curtain .inclosing said drum, an imperforate drum up into said first-named -drum v through t e hole in said il-oor, means supporting said imperforate drum, a plate Whereon `said imperforate drum is supported, said erforate drum having a coldairintake ue,
`and said imp'erforate drum having an eX- haust-iiuefapipe supported in said plate and r projecting' up into "said, imperfoate drum,
and a lamp 'arranged-beneath said pipe.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto `set my y hand this 19th day of January, 1906.,
'. NEWTON C. SPRGUE.
