Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL It IORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at l\ cw ark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in C ar-Louplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved automatic carcoupling; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed, the invention not being confined to the precise forms of the parts shown.
In the accompanying drawings, Flgure 1 1s a horizontal sectional view disclosing in plan view the knuckle and knuckle-locking devices, the latter being in knuckle-locking position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the knuckle-locking devices raised or in position to permit the uncoupling of cars. is a vertical section on the line in as, Fig. 1, and, as in Fig. 1, showing the lmuckle-locking devices in knuckle-locking position. In the views, 1 designates the draw-head, provided with a suitable cavity, and 2 the pivoted knuckle, the inner end or tail of which works horizontally on the cavity of the draw-head.
3 designates the knuckle-locking block. This block is pivoted on a horizontal pivot 3 in the right-hand side of the cavity as one looks in or so as to swing vertically and longitudinally of the draw-head in said cavity. he upper side of the block above the pivot is made with a V-shaped recess formed by a wall or ridge 3 and a projection 3. 'lhe right-hand side of the block (as one looks into the cavity) is cut away, and pivoted at l to the side of the block where it is cut away, is a small block or rest fl, so weighted that it tends to assume a position at right angles to the under side of the block, as seen right-angled position is oi course due to the position oi the pivotal point l, and the w all 5 of the cut-aw ay portion cooperates to limit the movement or the block and maintain it in the position it naturally assumes. 'lhe bottom of the cavity 01' the draw head is provided with a curv ed recess 1, in which the rest lies when the block is down, as seen in Fig. 3, in knuckle-locking position and upon which the low er end of the rest is supported when the knuckle-locking block is raised, as seen in big. l. 'l'he upper side of the tail of the knuckle is beveled toward the block, so as to pass readily under the same when raised.
5 designates a lever that is pivoted to swing horizontally on a vertical pivot 5 just back or the tall or the knuckle. One arm of this lever is shaped to be struck by the tail of the knuckle when it is turned into coupling position, while the other arm is furnished with a toe 5 adapted to strike the upper end of the small block or rest to dislodge it and permit the locking-block to fall into knucklelocking position.
The knuckle-locking block can be raised into position for permitting uncoupling by means of a rod 6, attached to the upper side of the block, and passed up through the upper wall of the cavity.
The lever 5 can be manipulated to throw the knuckle into uncoupled position or to dislodge the block or rest 4, if desired or necessary, by means of an extension of the pivot 5' through the bottom wall of the draw-head.
'lhe projection 23 keeps the lever in proper position to be operated.
It is obvious that a rest or block l can be tended to be held in the position indicated in Fig. 5 by means of a properly-placed spring.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupling, the combination with the draw-head having a tailed knuckle pivoted horizontally therein, of a knuckle-locking block pivoted to swing vertically therein and having a rest pivoted thereon to support the block in position to permit uncoupling, and a lever pivoted to swing horizontally in the draw-head adapted to have one arm struck by the tail of the knuckle and its other end adapted to dislodge the said rest when the knuckle is moved into coupling position.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination with the draw-head and a tailed knuckle pivoted horizontally therein, a knuckle-locking block provided with a recess and pivoted to swing vertically in the draw-head, a rest pivoted on said block to swing by gravity to support the block in position to permit uncoupling movement of the tail of the knuckle, and a lever pivoted to swing in a horizontal plane in the draw-head and having one arm adapted to be moved by the tail of the knuckle and its other arm extending into the aforesaid recess of the knucklelocking block whereby it is adapted to dislodge the said rest when the knuckle is moved toward coupling position.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination with the draw-head and a tailed knuckle pivoted horizontally therein, a knuckle-locking block provided with a recess and pivoted to swing vertically in the draw-head, a rest pivoted in said block to swing by gravity to support the block in position to permit uncoupling movement of the tail of the knuckle, the axis of the pivot of said rest being in fixed relation both to the block and the rest, and a lever pivoted to swing in a horizontal plane in the drawhead and having one arm adapted to be moved by the tail of the knuckle and its other arm extending into the aforesaid recess of the knuckle-locking block whereby it is adapted to directly strike and dislodge the said rest when the knuckle is moved toward coupling position.
