Description

PATENTED MAR. 5, 1907.
G. A. MEAD. RAIL BON D. APPLIGATION FILED Nov. 2a. 1904.
tion.
GEORGE A. MEAD, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
RAIL-BOND;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed November 23, 1904. Serial No. 233.937.
citizen of the United States, residing at Mansl field, in the county of Richland and. State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful -Rail- Bond, of which the following is a specifica- This invention relates to rail-bonds.
The object of the invention is to provide means for efficiently securing rail-bond terminals to the surfaces of rails or other parts to be bonded.
Other objects of the invention willl appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists, substantially, in the construction7 combination, location, and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown inthe accomdrawing, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing and to the various views and reference-signs appearing th ereon, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a rail-bond, showing the application thereto of a detachable solder-strip in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are views similar .to Fig. 2, showing modified forms of solderstrips embraced within the spirit and scope of my invention.
In the application of rail-bonds, and particularly rail-bonds provided with ila-t terrninal feet or terminals having flat surfaces, to the surfaces of rails or otherparts to be bonded it is a common practice to solder such surfaces. It has heretofore been proposed to provide rail-bonds of this class and type with permanent coatings and strips of solder applied to the surface of the bond-terminal which is to be applied to the rail or other part to be bonded. The objection to this practice is that the purchaser of a bond is required to pay also for the additional solder-strip, which is 'permanently attached thereto and forms part of the same, whereas it frequently happens that theuse. of a solderstrip is not desired in order .to apply the bond-terminalv to the surface to be bonded, thereby resulting` in an increased cost and expense to the purchaser of the bond.
l1` is the special purpose of iny present invenlion to provide a detachable solder-strip for rail-bonds and for application to the terminals thereof, which may be supplied with the bonds or independently of the bonds, and which may be placed in position against the bond-terminal surface when the use of such solder-strip'is desired, but which may be omitted when the use of such solder is not required, the essential feature beingan independent detachable solder-strip.
Referring to the accompanying drawin reference-sign A designates a rail-bon which may be of any suitable type or construction and having llat terminals B to be applied to the surface of Vthe rail or other part to be bonded.
C designates a detachable solder-strip. This solder-strip may be in any suitable or desired form. For instance and as shown at C in Fig. 4 it maybe in the form of a flat strip adapted to be applied flatwise against the surface of the bond-terminal, which is to be applied to the rail or other part to be bonded and between the surfaces of the bond-terminal and rail when required for use. If desired and in order to allord means for supporting the solder-stri upon the bond-terminal while the bond islbeing placed in position for application to the rail or other part to be bonded, the solder-strip C2 (see Fig. 3) may be provided with an angular flange D, arranged to engage over the upper edge of the bond-terminal, whereby the solder-strip is suspended or supported by the terminal. In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown the solder-strip C of channel shape, that is provided with ilanges D', the body of the bondterminal being received in the channel formed thereby, thus affording means for supporting the solder-strip upon the bondterminal. In Fir. 5 I have shown a modified form of sol er-strip C, provided with lateral flanges D2, arranged to fit over the edges of the bond-terminal, said flanges terminating in overturned portions E to Vengage, the outersurfaces of the bond-terminal. In any case it will be seen that the solder-strip is detachable, and hence can be readily removed when not required; but when re,- quired it may be threaded upon the terminal and placed in position against the surface thereof which is to be applied to the. surface of the rail or other part to be bonded and which, if desired, may be suspended or supported by the bond-terminal while theA bond is' being handled or applied to the rail-surface.
As above indicated the particular type or also obvious that the l.solder-strips may be construction of rail-bond is immaterial so far as my invention is concerned, so long as it is l provided with .terminals for application to i the rail or otherepart to be bonded. It is l varied in shape or cross-section and may or ,l may not be provided with means for suspending or supporting the same upon the i bond-terminal, andl the form or construction j of such strip to enable the same to be snspended or supported upon the terminal may be varied without departure from the spirit i and scope of my invention, the essential feature of which, as aboveindicated, is in the provision ofatsolder-strip which may be detached from or ap lied to the bond at will. [n practice the sol er-strips are of somewhat less length than the bond-terminal to which the saine is to be applied, though this is not anessential feature of the invention.
Having now set forth the object and nal ture of my invention and a construction emi bodying the principles thereof, what I claim i as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a rail-bond having a terminal, of a longitudinally-removable 1 solder-strip provided with retaining-flanges at the edges thereof to engage over the edges of the bond-terminal.
2. The combination with a rail-bond having terminals, of' a solder-strip adapted to be removably applied to one surface of the bond-ternnnal and having flangesengaging l over the edges of the terminal ol' the bond,
said flanges having turned-over portions to engage the other surface ol" the bond-terminal.
In witness whereof 1 have hereunto set my hand, this 19th day of November, 1904, in the presence ol' the subscribing witnesses.
