JR, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SIGNAL-LANTERN- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907.
Application filed October 5, 1906. Serial No. 33 7.540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. H ND- LAN, Jr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal-Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates and refers particularly to the means employed for changing the position of the colored glasses so as to give the desired signal, the object of my invention being to provide a form of shifting mechanism that will not be likely to get out of order and which is positive in its action and Which at the same time is inexpensive.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure I is a view of my improved lantern, part in elevation and part in vertical section. Fig. II is a transverse section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is an enlarged detail view taken on line III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is a section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the cylindrical body of the lantern, having the usual lens-openings.
2 represents the bulls-eyes, of which there may be any desired or suitable number. Within the lantern there is arranged for each plate or glass 3, supported in a suitable curved metal frame 6, slidable and held in curved guides 4. curved metal holding-frame 6 is constructed with a curved front plate provided with an opening corresponding to the lens-opening in the lantern-body with vertical channel-strips 6 at the edges of the holding-frame for re ceiving the edges of the glass plate 3 and with a segmental bottom plate 6 upon which the glass plate is supported. The guides 4 con sist of lower and. upper right-angle guidestrips in which the curved front plate of the holding-frame 6 is adapted to slide. To the manner of shifting and changing these plates so as to produce the desired color of light through the bulls-eyes my invention relates; and it consists of a curved depending rack 5 on the under side of each curved frame 6, that meshes with a vertical pinion 7, fixed on a to a signal-lantern,
l l l 1 The l crank-shaft 8, that passes through a bearing 9, secured to the body of the lantern. The rack-bar 5 is formed with a recess which receives the flange of the lower guide-strip 4.
I/Vhen it is desired to change the color of the light of either of the bulls-eyes, it is only necessary to turn the crank-shaft 8 and the movement is transmitted through the vertical pinion and curved depending rack to the colored glass of this particular bulls-eye. This movement is a positive one, and the glass will be held in any position to which it may be shifted by the gear connection between it and the crank-shaft.
To avoid any possibility of the jarring of the lamp moving the gear and permitting the shifting 01 the glass, I arrange on the bearingsleeve 8 of the crank-shaft of each vertical pinion a spring-plate 10, the central portion of which bears against the inner wall of the body of the lamp and the outer end of which presses against the inner faces of the respecpilxie Vertical pinions, as clearly shown in Fig.
I claim- 1 1. The combination, with a lantern-body having an opening; of lower and upper curved rightangle guide-strips, a glass-plate-hold ing frame having a curved front plate 'provided with an opening corresponding to the opening in the lantern-body, and adapted to slide in the guide-strips, a segmental bottom plate, upon which the glass plate is supported, and vertical channel-strips at the edges of the holding-frame in which the edges of the glass plate are received, a depending segmental rack-bar secured to the bottom plate and having a recess receiving the flange of the 7 lower guide-strip, a crank-shaft journaled 111 the lanternb0dy, and a vertical. pinion mounted upon and fixed to the crank-shaft.
2. The combination, with a lantern-body having an opening of lower and upper curved right-angle guide-strips, aglass-plate-holding frame having a curved front plate provided with an opening corresponding to the opening in the lanternbody, and adapted to slide in the guide-strips, a segmental bottom plate, upon which the glass plate is supported, and vertical channel-strips at the edges of the holding-frame in which the edges of the glass plate are received, a depending segmental rack-bar secured to the bottom plate and having a recess receiving the flange of the lower guide-strip, a crank-shaft journaled in the i lantern-body, aver tieal pinion mounted upon i and fixed to the crank-shaft, the bearingsleeve through which the crank passes, the bearing-collar in. which the bearing-sleeve is supported, and the spring-plate mounted! upon the bearing-sleeve and pressing against the lantern-body, and against the pinion.
