SIGNAL-LIGHT.
.L'PECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 738,781, da/ted September 15, 1903.
Application filed November 30, 19071l Serial No. 84,277. (No model.)
the following is a specification.
a which are provided With reflectors for the purpose of projecting a portion of therays up-l -Ward for signaling purposes; and my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the reflectoras fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure lis a sectional elevation of sufficient of a locomotive-headlight to illustrate my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
The general features of my invention cor respond to those of the `Letters Patent to Samuel H. Harrington, No. 495,938, dated April 18, 1893, Where there is a supplemental reiiector arranged in front of the headlightcasing to project a portion of the light-rays upward.-
` The casing A of the headlight, the reflector C, and the lamp B are of any of the usual constructions, the` rays of the lamp being thrown forward by the reliector through the ordinary goggle-plate D.
Las
With'a reilecting-surface, as heretofore, consists of a plate of plain glass, Whichmay be arranged so as to receive all of the light-rays passing from the reflector C, as indicated in full lines, Fig. l. The rays'of light passing 4o Ato the plate E are partly reliected upward and partly pass through the said plate, so that there is secured both the horizontal and the vertical rays required in such cases. The reflector E may be stationary; but, as: shown, 45 it is placed in a frame connected with a shaft l, having an arm 2, connected by a rod 3 with any reciprocating portion of the engine-as, for instance, the valve-shafte-so that an oscillating or vibrating motion is imparted to 5o.`
the reectorplate, thereby indica ting Whether the engine is in motion.
Without limiting myself to the specific construction-and arrangement of parts shown, I claim as my inventionl; The combination with a locomotive-head` light, of a signal-reflector consisting of'a transparent plate arranged to receive all the horizontal rays and to transmit a part of the said rays horizontally and to reliect a part at an 6o angle to the horizontal rays.
2. The4 combination with the casing, reflector and lamp of a locomotive-headlight, of a transparent plate arranged in front of the casing at an angle thereto to permit a portion 65 of the horizontal light-rays to pass horizontally and also to rellect a portion upward, and means for vibrating said plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 7o name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
