AUTOMATIC GREASE-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. DERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Grease- Cups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grease-cups; and the object of the present invention is to construct a cup that will automatically insure a constant and uniform discharge of the lubricant.
A further object is to so construct the cup that it cannot be removed without first removing the cover, and then only with the aid of a specially-constructed wrench.
The construction overcomes to a great extent the loss by theft of a great number of cups, especially from locomotives left standing in railroad-yards.
The construction also insures the economical use of the lubricant.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of my cup. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the removable stem. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the Wrench. v
The numeral 1 designates the body of the cup, which may be made of any suitable material. The cup has a central opening in its bottom, and in this opening is located a comparatively loosely fitting removable stem 2. This stem is formed with a square head 3, with a circular flange 4 at its base, which flange is adapted to bear against the inside of the bottom of the cup. The body of the stem depends below the cup and is screwthreaded externally, as usual, for connecting it to the part to be lubricated. The stem has a central opening 5 entirely through it, and the top 6 of this opening is enlarged to insure the easy entrance therein of the grease.
The cup is provided with a cover 7, having a central screw-threaded opening 8 therein, in which is located an adjusting-screw 9. This screw is provided with a j am-nut 10, by means of which the screw is set after adjustment is made. plunger-rod 11 passes through it and carries on its lower end a piston 12, adapted to bear This stem is hollow, and a' against the surface of the grease. This piston is backed by a coiled spring 13, which surrounds the rod 11 and rests against the inner end of the screw 9. The plunger-rod .11 fits loosely in the screw, and the spring tends to keep the piston down against the grease at all times and to insure an even discharge. WVith this construction a constant and uniform feed is insured.
The device may be easily taken apart for cleaning by any one who is provided with the necessary wrench, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. This wrench is so constructed that it will engage the square head of the stem 2 while its end projects above the top edge of the cup, and this end may be engaged by any suitable tool for turning it. The removal of this stem permits the cup to be removed. The mere turning of the cup would not disengage the screwstem. This construction will prevent the removal of cups by others than those authorized to do so.
Having thus fully described my invention and its operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In agrease-cup for lubricating purposes, a body having a central opening in its bottom, a removable screw-threaded stem loosely fitting in said opening, said stem hav ing a square head, a circular collar at the base of said head adapted to bear against the inside of the bottom of said body and a central tapered opening, substantially as described.
2. In a grease-cup for lubricating purposes, a body having a central opening at its bottom, a removable screw-threaded stem loosely fitting in said opening, said stem having a square head, a circular collar and a central tapered opening, a removable cover for said body having a central, internally-screwthreaded opening, a hollow adjusting-screw located in said opening, a ja1n-nut for setting said screw, a plunger-rod passing loosely through said screw, a piston on the lower end of said rod and a coiled spring interposed between said piston and the end of said adjusting-screw.
