Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs WIDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in that type of door-hangers in which there is a hinged or flexible connection between the wheel-supporting element and the door-supporting element.
The special objects of my improvements are to provide a hanger of this kind from strap metal with as few parts as possible, one which can be readily assembled and disassembled, in which the door may be hung either in alinement with the carrier-wheel or may he freely swung outwardly, but in which the inwardswinging movement will be checked by a portion of the hanger, and in which one of the hanger elements will constitute a guard for the rail or track on which the device travels.
Having the aforegoing special objects and others of general utility in view, I have invented the hanger which is shown in a preferred form in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which- Figure i is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, showing a hanger made according to. my invention applied to a building and to a door. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the hanger shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, but the door shown as swung outwardly from the building. Fig. 4 is a detail in plan of the link which connects the wheel-carrying hanger-.arm with the doorsupporting strap. Fig. 5 is a'detail in perspective of said link made in a modified form for the purpose of bringing the door in direct alinement with the hanger wheel or sheave, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents a section of the'buildingl to whichl my hanger is applied, and a one of the brackets used to support the trackor rail a2, such bracket and track forming no part of my inl vention and may be of any preferred conj struction.
B represents a section of the door to which my hanger is applied by means of a U-shaped sheet-metal strap b', which is bolted to the doorin the usual manner and is formed with an extension b2, which `serves as a hmging portion for said strap. The wheel-carrying hanger-arm C is formed from a single piece 'of strap metal and has its upper end bent over with a downwardly-extending portion c', which is parallel to the body of the 'arm and with the latter forms a suitable housing for the sheave D, which is mounted therein lon an axle d in the usual manner. The lower portion of the arm C is bent inwardly at right angles, as at c2, and the end bent downwardly at right angles to the portion c2, as shown at c3. The side edges of the portion c2 are notched, as at c4, to receive a link, to be described. The arm C and strap b are con'- nected together by means of the metal link E, in which is cut a longitudinal slot e and which is formed with an upwardly-extending portion e2. In applying this link to the parts above described the strap b is inserted through the slot e before said strap is bolted to the door B. The lower portion of the arm C is then inserted through the said slot in the link, so that the link rests upon and is pendent from the horizontal portion c2 of the arm C, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 3, and the inner edges of the slotted portion fit the notches c4.
In practice the slote will be cut as shown in Fig. 4, so that the notched portion of the arm C will fit snugly in the upper part of the slot, while the strap b will have a loose lit in the lower portion of said slot, inasmuch as it is desirable to have the strap b swing freely on the link and undesirable to have the link.

By extending the upper portion of the link as shown at e2 I provide a guard which lies along the inner side of the track a2, thus holding the wheelarm vertical and preventing it from jumping the track should the door by accident or otherwise be thrown outwardly, as indicated in Fig. 3. By extending the portion c3 of the arm C downwardly and'arranging it to abut against the extension b2 of the strap bit will be apparent that it serves as a check for the inward swing of the door B, as the extreme end of the portion c3 will strike against the adjacent shoulder of the strap b. The door may he swung outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, toany limit IOS that may be desired in the practical operation of a sliding door.
It will be noted that, as shown and arranged in Figs. l and 3, the door is swung off the center represented by a median line through the track a2 and wheel D, the purpose of such arrangement being to bring the door as closely as possible to the building A, a result that is usually desirable in the use of a device of this kind. If, however, it is desired that the door should be hung in true alinement with the track and wheel, I may provide a link like that shown in Fig., 5, in which the slotted portion a will be o'fliset from the guard portion e2 and in which the link will be so arranged relative to the arm C and strap b that the lower portion of the slot in which the strap b is hinged will come in direct alinement with the track a2. Various other modifications in the form of the link E may be made without departing from the principle ofmy invention, which consists in so forming the wheel-arm and link that the latter will serve as a hinging member between the wheel-carrying arm and the door-strap, respectively, and will also serve as a guard for the inner side of the track and in so forming the Wheel-carrying arm that it will serve as a stop to the swing of the door in one direction. It will be noted that vthe lower portion of the hanger-arm is bent inwardly, so that it will lie closely to and parallel with the track, and it will be apparent that this portion of the arm forms a guard for the outer'side of the track and coperaties with the link in providing a-guideway for the track which keeps Athe hanger from jumping the track.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination wth a supporting-track, a wheel-carrying hanger-arm having its lower portion extending at an angle to its ymain portion, and terminating in a downwardly-extending portion, a doorsupporting strap, a link connecting said hanger-arm and door-strap and constructed to form a guard for the purpose specied.
2. In combination with a supporting-track, a door-hanger comprising a wheel-carrying hanger-arm, having a horizontal portion at its lower end, a door-supporting strap, and a link hung on said horizontal portion of the hanger-arm connecting said arm and strap and constructed to form a guard 'for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with a supporting-track, a door-hanger comprising a wheel-carrying arm, bent inwardly near its lower end as shown, and also bent to form a horizontal portion at its lower end, a door-supporting strap, and a link hung on said horizontal portion of the hangenarm, loosely connecting said arm and strap and having a portion eX- tending upwardly on the inner side of the track for the purpose set forth.
4. In a door-hanger, a wheel-carrying hanger-arm having its lower portion extending inwardly at right angles to its upper portion and having its lower end bent downwardly, a door-supporting strap having an extension thereon, and a link loosely and detachably connecting said hanger-arm and door-strap.
5. In a door-hanger, a wheel-carrying hanger-arm, a door-supporting strap, said arm and strap having abutting portions whereby the swinging oi' the strap in one direction will be checked, and a link connecting said arm and strap.
6. In combination with a supporting-track, a door-hanger comprising a wheel-carrying hanger-arm, a door-supporting strap hung on said hanger-arm out of alinement with the hanger-wheel, and a link connecting said arm and strap and forming a guard to hold the hanger-arm in vertical position.
7. In a door-hanger, a wheelcarrying hanger-arm, and a door-supporting strap, a link connecting said arm and strap, and having a slot therethrough, one portion of which is of greater length than the other.
8. In a door-hanger, a wheel-carrying hanger-arm having its lower portion extending inwardly at an angle to its main portion and notched in its edges, a link arranged on said hanger-arm and engaging its notches, and a door-supporting strap connected with said link.
9. In a door-hanger, a wheel-carrying hanger-arm and a door-supporting strap, a link connecting said arm and strap, and -formed with a longitudinal slot therethrough and having an extension at its upper edge.
10. In a door-hanger, a wheel-carrying hanger-arm, consisting of a single piece of metal bent at its upperportion to form a wheel-housing and at its lower portion bent inwardly and downwardly to lie near a hangeretrack, then bent to form a horizontal portion, and having its end bent downwardly at right angles to such horizontal portion.
