METALLIC REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE STRUCTURAL WORK.
Application filed January 22;
T0 L ZZ whont it may concern: v
Be it known that I, CARL Holux, a citizen in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Imoncrete Structural Work; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to metallic reinforce'- ments for concrete structural work of various of tensile strands and two series of stress portions or members substantially A shape in elevation connecting said strands, all substantially as shown and described,- and particularly pointed out in the claims.
`In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of a section or piece of a complete reinforcement `according to my present invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of ashort section or pieceor` the reinforcement embodying a modification ofthe upper strand, as compared with Figs.' 1 and 2.
As thus shown the reinforcement is con of two or more wires or their equivalent strands or chords are spaced apartvfrom one 'another relatively, as shown. A single -inof ya plurality of' wires, lafs shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and one wire C, as shown in Fig. 3, and the sides or stress members of the reinforcement'4 areformed with separate wires D and E. These wires are bent to approximately V shape, as seen in side elevation, and have opposite portions 2 and 3 at an inclination toboth lines of strands viewed lengthwise and also inclined to about the same degree transversely, as seen in cross'- sectii, Fig. 2. However, Tinl this latter view only one sten`1`of ,each'wire' D and E is shown, and said Wires cross each other back first to one side and then to the other alterforty-five de rees to the axis of the strands and are fixed y engaged with both'the upper and the lower strands in manner as' 'shown or equivalently. y
Specication of' Letters Patent.
Patented March 5, 1907. 190e. serial 110,297,191.
The so-called upper7 or intermediate strand B, Fig. l, is shown as more closely woven `or twisted than the base-strands, though it need not bo, and also of smaller wire,
i because the principal strain comes on the basestrand and a simple modification of this construction is seen in Fig. 3, wherein a single Wire C serves the purpose of the strand for unitin the side wires. This latter wire is provided with loops or eyes c at the crossing-points for the side wires D and E, which are threaded through these loops from opposite sides, and said wire C thus serves as an eiiective tie for the several side wires or stress members of the reinforcement at their crossing-v points the full length of the reinforcement.
In point of fact, the connecting or tie strandl or chord may be very much lighter than the tensile strands A and B,4 because the strain naturally comesl on the tensile strands and the other strand is designed more particularly to provide a running connection from crossing to crossing of the side wires and to make the reinforcement complete in this particular in so far as such connectionbetween the'side wires may be needed. However viewed and in whatever relation or use 'the reinforcement'may be employed it has the exceptional value ofa truss in point of.
strength and resistance. Hence it is especially advantageous for 4all overhead worksuch as arches, ceilings, girders, roofs, i
floor-work, and the likefebut may also be variously employed, as in columns, posts, railroad-ties, and generally wherever concrete work of any considerable proportions is employed and added strength is desired.
l'. As a new article of manufacture, a reinforcement for colu1nns, fenceposts and the like, substantially V-shaped in cross-section and having two base-strands and asingle centrally-disposed intermediate strand, 'all of said strands constructed of a plurality of wires twisted together, and side Wires bent' into a series of, V shaped Yformations andl interwovenwith both the said base-strands and the said intermediate strands, and said side wires crossing each other at approximately right angles in the said intermediate strand yand running alternately through the saidbase-stran'ds.
.2. A reinforcement for fence-posts and the like formed of wire and having two basestrands anda centrally-disposed intermediate `strand, andwire'sides for said reinrco v lin crosssection'.
