Be it known that I, BENJAMIN M. NUzUM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Grafton, county of Taylor, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in reamers, and more particularly to a reamer for reaming the heads of injectorspindles; and it consists in the particular construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will hereinafter be fully described.
The object of the invention is to provide a reamer for reaming the heads of injectorspindles to form smooth and perfect seats thereon for fitting the mouths of the steamnozzles of injectors.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for quickly and accurately reaming seats upon the heads of injector-spindles and the like.
As is well known, considerable difficulty is experienced in forming accurate seats on the heads of injector-spindles, so as toform perfeet oints when said heads are brought into engagement with the mouths of the injector steam-nozzles. Further, when said spindleheads have become worn from use much trouble is experienced and much time consumed in truing up said seats.
By the use of my invention a perfect and accurate seat may be conveniently and quickly formed upon the spindle-head either when the spindle is first being made or after the seat has become defective from wear.
In describing the invention in detail reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichu Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention with a spindle therein in position for reaming. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, enlarged, oft he cutter-head; and Fig. 4 is a front end elevation of the yoke.
Referring to the drawings, in which like reference-numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the yoke, 2 the guide, and 3 the cutter-head, of my improved reamer, whi le 4 is the ordinary injector-spindle mounted in position for having the head 5 thereof reamed to form a seat 6 or to correct imperfections therein. Said yoke consists of an interiorly-threaded sleeve 7, having two broad integral substantially parallel arms or members S, as shown. Said arms or members 8 have on their inner faces at their outer ends lugs 9 for engaging rectangular transverse channels 10, provided in the opposite flat faces 11 of the cutter-head 3. The threaded opening through the sleeve 7 of the yoke is considerably larger than the stem of the spindle 4 for a purpose which will presently be made apparent. Said cutter-head 3 is preferably made reversible and has a longitudinal socket 12 therein or therethrough, in which the point 13 of said spindle is adapted to fit. The ends of said cutter-head have therein openings or sockets 14, which are substantially conical inform, being tapered to correspond with the desired shape or form of the seat 6. are provided in said tapered or conical sockets, as shown. The said tapered sockets may be of different sizes, as shown in the drawings, thus adapting said cutter-head for use in reaming spindles of different sizes. In such case the socket 12 is not of the same caliber throughout; but a second socket 16, of a size corresponding v ith the size of the spindle-point to be held therein, is made to open into said socket 12 from the opposite end.
When it is desired to employ my invention for reaming a spindle, the stem of the latter is inserted rear end first in the yoke 1 until the head 5 thereof seats itself in the socket 17, provided in the inner end of the sleeve 7 thereof. The cutter-head is then inserted past the spindle-point 13 between the members 8 of the yoke by sliding it sidewise with the lugs 9 in the channels 10. Then said spindle is forced forward until its point 13 enters said socket 12 and the head 5 seats itself in the tapered socket 14 against the cutting or reaming edges 15. Theguide 2, which is sleeve-like in form and is exteriorly threaded, is then slipped over the stem of the spindle from the rear end and is screwed forward in the sleeve 7 of the yoke until its front end engages the rear face of said spindle-head 5. A handle or crank 18 is then mounted upon the rear end ofthe stem of the spindle and secured in place by means of -an impinging set-screw 19. Having then inserted the members 8 of the yoke between the jaws of a vise or like device to hold it stationary, the spindle is revolved by turning said handle or crank 18. ing engagement with the reaming edges of the cutter-head by means of the guide 2, a seat 6 is quickly cut upon said head.
The guide 2 lits closely about the stem of the spindle, as does also the cutter-head about the point thereof, and consequently no lateral movement is admitted in said spindle. rIhe result is that a perfectly true and accurate seat 6 is formed upon the head" 5. By' manipulating said guide 2 in the yoke the pressure of the spindle-head against the cutting or reaming edges may be adjusted, and consequently the feed of the spindle forward regulated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that provide an extremely simple reamer of the character described and that the same is admirably adapted for the urposes specified.
l/Vhile I have described my invention in what I consider to be its simplest form, it is obvious that various .slight alterations within the scope of the claims may be m-ade in the construction and arrangement of some of the parts without departing from the general spirit or scope of the invention. Hence I do Vnot wish to limit myself to the precise coni nels in opposite outer Jfaces of said cutter-v head, an interiorly-threaded sleeve, integral arms carried by said sleeve, said arms pro vided with means for engaging the channels in said cutter-head, and an adjustable eX- teriorly-threaded guide in engagement with the internal threads of said sleeve for embracing a spindle and directing it forward toward said reaming-surface and for regulating the feed of said spindle.
