AUTOMATIC STOP-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE LoUIs BAZIN, a citizen of the French Republic, and a resident of Nantes, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stop-Valves, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This inventon relates to automatic stopvalves and its object is to provide a valve of this kind provided with a ring and a piston which will be operative in-both directions. The object of such a valve is to stop automatically the flow of a i'luid-such as steam, gas,
or waterin motion when the pressure diminishes too much on one side or on the other side of the valve.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means whereby the valve may be opened from the outside when it is judged necessary, so that the flow of the fluid may be reestablished without difliculty.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 shows a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improved stop-valve, some parts being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the median plane of the valve on line G H.
The stop-valve or return-valve, owing to the fact that it is adapted to operate closure in both directions, may be termed a back and forward valve or a double acting valve. It comprises a receptacle or casing a (La, a, made of cast-iron, cast-steel, bronze, or any other su'Ilicientlyresistant material. This casing contains a hollow fixed cylinder E E E E, thickened in the middle, as AA A A, on its inner wall. Inside this thickened part is a piston P, adapted to slide in the axial ine of the cylinder E E E E. The latter is provided with openings or ports F F F F, permitting the fluid in motion entering and escaping. Let us suppose that the fluid b e steam coming from a boiler from the side V and that this steam flows to the apparatuses ot' a Workshop situated on the side V. A ring B B B B surrounds the cylinder E E E E and may be shifted in the direction of the axis, so as to cover in one direction the openings F or the openings F in the opposite di rection. A pin X X connects the piston P to the ring B B B B. The position of the rollers g g is such that the perpendicular line drawn from point 0 to the line connecting the shaft of g 9 passes between the latter. The pin X X, connecting the ring B B B B to the piston I, traverses the cylinder E E E E through two small diametrallyopposed openings, one whereof is shown in Fig. 1 at f f The operation of the device is as follows: When the piping on the side V is not broken and the steam under pressure arrives from the boiler and enters the valve from the side V, this steam enters through E E, passes through F F and afterward through F F, and enters the p ping situated on side V, con- If the piping is broken on side V, the steam coming from V exerts greater pressure on side A A of the piston than on side A A. In this manner the piston P is pushed toward the broken piping on side V, and the ring B B B B, carried by the piston P, closes the openings F F, and consequently stops the flow of steam, which can no longer escape to the outside through EE on the side V. If, on the contrary, the boiler situated on sideV is opened without an explosion taking place, the pressure diminishes in V, and now the pressure existing in the piping on side V acts upon the side A A of the piston P, which is thus pushed back toward V as well as the ring B B B B, so that the latter closes the openings F F. The lever u a O L X is adapted to be rocked by hand, and consequently the ring and the piston be moved in one direction or the other. On the other hand, by a pressure exerted at N the lever Q N may be applied on the rollers g g, and thus the piston and its ring are carried to their middle position, wherein the ports F F F F are open.
A cock R is provided when it is desired to withdraw the condensed steam.
A cock R or escape-cock (opening into the atmosphere or another medium) is normally closed. It may be opened when the piping on side V is broken. This escape-cock allows the escape of a certain amount of steam, which is very useful, as otherwise the steam would have been inclosed in the boiler and the pressure, bymeans of the valve-openings F F being closed, would beliable to rise too violently under the action of the furnace. On the other side this cock R is adapted to avoid the relative vacuum in an apparatus by permitting the air entering the latter.
The cock B may be opened and closed by hand. It may be opened automatically by one of the levers moving. In the example shown in the drawings the lever Q N is con nected by a chain to the key of the cock R, thus operating the latter.
The ring B B B B as well as the piston P may receive a certain play, winch will render the;r motions easier, and in the case of breaking of the piping on the side V the sad play, in spite of the openings F F being closed, would allow of a small escape of steam under pressure, thus indicating to the ear and the eye that the pipe is broken.
When the ring untimely closes the passage owing to too large a diminution of pressure on the side V and when the levers do not return automatically into their midole position, the lever Q N, which had been raised, is lowered upon the rollers g g. Thiswould return the ring into its middle position, corresponding to the full opening of the returnvalve.
The lever may also be provided with a controlling-handle M, projecting to the outside and giving the lever the orm M u a O L X.
The diameter of the piston P must only be sufficient for overcoming the passive resistances of the stuffing-boxes of shaft 0, the ring B B B B of the piston P, and the lever Q N. This diameter having been determined for peculiar instances and initial pressures may be used each time that these peculiar cases occur and that whatever may be the discharging-opening E E. This diameter will be small for low pressures and large for high pressures.
The total section of the opening F F will at least be equal to the entrance-section E E. In a similar manner the total section F F will be at least equal to E E and to E E.
The ring B B B B in the embodiment shown in the drawings is provided with annular projections or flanges projecting several millimeters. These flanges are intended to actuate the lever u a O I! X, terminated by a fork X L X, the ends X X whereof come into contact with the flanges. The latter are also intended to allow the ring B B B B being carried on by the steam-current when breakage occurs on the side V or on the side V. The said annular flanges may be dispensed with either totally or partly. The lever 11. u 0 L X may receive motion directly from the ring, as in the drawings, or directly from the pin X X, which in this case would be prolongated, so as to project into the ends of the lever u 'u/ 0 L X.
The piston P may be replaced by a fixed partition-wall; but it is necessary in this case to increase the height of the projecting annular flanges of the ring.
The ring B B B B could be replaced by a plane slioe, equilibrated or not, closing on one side an opening of the kind of that designated by F and on the other side an opening of the kind of F.
The triangle formed by the three points 0 u a may be secured to the shaft 0 in any desired position round the point 0. The lever Q N would follow the position of the line it 'u/i. 6., it will be horizontal, vertical, or inclined. The leverQ l l may carry a counterweight adapted to control its action on the rollers g g. The lever Q- N could be dispensed with, and a pendulum keyed on shaft L) could even be substituted for it.
The stuffing-boxes of the shaft 0 may be replaced by conical or other joints.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casing, and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, of a reciprocating valve slidably arranged Within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with and adapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved.
2. In an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casing, and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, of a reciprocating valve slidably arranged within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with and adapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved, and means connected with the piston for manually shifting the latter.
3. In an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casing, and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, of a reciprocating valve slidably arranged within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with and adapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved, and a cock carried by the casing adapted to discharge condensed steam.
4. In an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casing, and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, of a reciprocating valve slidably arranged within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with and adapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved, and means connected with the valve for manually shifting the latter and an escape-cock carried by the casing.
5. in an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casing, and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, of a reciprocating valve slidably arranged within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with andadapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one 'or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved, and means connected with the valve for manually shifting the latter and an escape-cock carried by the casing, and a connection between said escapecock and the said manually-operated means.
6. In an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casin and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, of a reciprocating valve slidably arranged within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with and adapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved, said ring having annular flanges thereon and a lever connected with the valve and adapted to be operated by said flanges.
7. In an automatic valve of the character described, the combination with a casing, and a cylinder carried thereby and provided with opposing ports, o1 a reciprocating valve slidably arranged within the cylinder intermediate the ports and a ring connected with and adapted to move with said valve when the latter is moved and adapted to cover one or the other of the ports according to which direction said valve is moved, and means connected with said valve comprising oscillatable levers operated from said valve, rollers carried by one of said levers and a pivoted lever adapted to be engaged by said rollers.
