AUTOMATIC STOP-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,008, dated July 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN SEYMOUR DODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mayersville, in the county of Issaquena and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stop-Valves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in valves; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a valve to be placed in steam-pipes adjacent to a boiler and so constructed as to close automatically in case of the steam-pipe bursting. It is to be so arranged as to place the steampressure on top of the valve. The valve is mounted on the stem or rod of the piston, so as to be opened and closed by the movement of the latter. The valve or disk is designed to be raised from its seat by pressure being admitted on the outside of the piston and maintained in such position until the pressure is removed, when the valve will be closed automatically by the pressure on the valve or disk.
The parts are readily assembled, not liable to derangement or injury, and the device as a whole is cheap and durable, and in action is most efficient.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 shows a central vertical section of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the connection with the boiler, &c.
Reference being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the casting or body portion of the valve-casing, in the cylinder A of which is designed to work the piston, soon to be described. This casting or Serial No. 546,373. (No model.)
body portion has suitable provision for connection with the steam-drum of the boiler, as shown at A and is formed with a valve-seat B, of usual form, in the diaphragm 13 within the casting or body portion, as shown.
The end of the cylinder is provided with an opening 0, from which is designed to lead a small steam-pipe yto the throttle-valve chamber in the engine-room, in which should be placed in a suitable position a stop-valve of known construction and operation. A small pipe as is also run from the said opening in the end of the cylinder to the steam-drum, in which should be placed a suitable valve.
D is a cap provided with a packing-gland and 'stuffing-box of usual construction,
through which passes the valve-stem E, the other end of which is pivotally connected with the leverF,'which is fulcrumed on the bracket or fulcrum G, rising from the said cap, as shown, and on the end of this lever is the weight H, all as shown, and operating in a well-known manner.
On the valve-stem or piston-rod is the valve or disk I, which is fitted to the valve-seat B, and near the end is the piston J, of any wellknown form of construction, fitted to work in tile cylinder A. This piston is retained upon t e valve-stem or piston-rod, as by a nut h.
The valve is intended as a stop-valve to be placed in the main steam-pipes next to the boiler or steam-drum, so that the steam may be shut off from the main steam-pipe at will, or to close automatically in case the main steam-pipe should burst. After the main steam-pipe is filled, the pipe as is shut oif and the pipe q supplies the steam-pressure required to hold the valve open.
The pipe depending from the lower end of the'casing has connected therewith the pipes leading in opposite directions, the one connected with the steam-drum X and the other with the pipe is connected to the steam-pipe,
valve may be opened by closing the valve in in the pipe that is connected to the steampipe and has an autom atic stop-valve between it and the boiler whereby any sudden reduction of pressure in said steampipe will relieve the pressure on the piston and close the valve, and opening the valve in the pipe leading to the steam-drum, when the steam will be admitted to the cylinder A through the said pipe, and, raising the piston, raises the valve with it, when the condition of things should be reversed, the valve in the pipe leading to the steam-drum being closed and the other opened. The pressure to maintain the valve 1 open is then obtained from the main steam-pipe A and it will be readily seen that in case that the main steam-pipe should burst, the pressure in the cylinder would be released and the valve I would antomatically close.
The advantages of the construction above described will be apparent to and will be appreciated by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.
\Vhat I claim to be new is l. The combination with the body portion of the valve-casing, of a pipe leading from the end of the cylinder of said casing and connected to the steam-pipe, a pipe leading from the same end of the cylinder to the steamdrum, a cap with stuffing-box, a valve-stein passed through said box, a lever fulcrumed on a standard rising from said cap and pivot ally connected with said stem, a disk I on said stem upon one side of the valve-seat, a piston on said stem on the other side of said seat, and a stop-nut on the end of the stem in line with the opening in the end of the cylinder, all substantially as shown and d eseribed, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with the body portion of the valve-casing, of a pipe leading from the end of the cylinder of said casing and connected tothe steam-pipe, a pipe leading from the same end of the cylinder to the steamdruln, a cap with stufiingbox, a valve-stein passed through said box, a lever fulcrunied on a standard rising from said cap and pivotally connected with said stem, a disk I on said stem upon one side of the valve-seat, a piston on said stem on the other side of said seat, a stop-nut on the end of the stem in line with the opening in the end of the cylinder, and independent valves in said pipes upon opposite sides of the opening in the end of the cylinder, substantially as described.
The combination with the body portion of the valve-casing, of a pipe leading from the end of the cylinder of said casing and con.- nected to the steam-pipe, a pipe leading from the same end of the cylinder to the steamdruni, a cap with stufling-box, a valve-stem passed through said box, a lever fulcrunied on a standard rising from. said cap and pivotally connected with said stein, a disk I on sai d. stem upon one side of the valve-seat, a piston on said stem on the other side of said seat, a stop-nut on the end of the stem in line with the opening in the end of the cylinder, and, independent valves in said pipes upon. opposite sides of the opening in the end of the cylinder, the body portion having connection with the boileron the side of the valve-seat, substantially as described.
