Description

PATENTE: FEB 36, 190'/A G. SCHRADE.

POCKET KNIFE. APPLIUATIDH FILED SEPT. ao, 1905.

UNITED STATES GEORGE SCHRDE, OF

WALDEN,

PATENTOFFIGE.

NEW YORK.

POCKET-KNIFE.

' citizen of the vUnited States, residing at Wal- ,l

den, in tl'ieeounty of Orange and tate of l New York, havemade certain new and usel ful Improvements' in Pockctdinives; and Il l hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the sinne, reference being l had to the accompanying drawings, forming l a part of this specification.

This invention relates toY 'that class of knives in' which the blade automatically opens when released, the blade being locked in position both'when open and when closed.

Ihe present improvements conprise novel means for releasing thi blade an locking it l when open or shut'.

The different features of the invention will be more particularly described hereinafter by reference to the drawings, in whieh-- i igure l is an exterior side View. Fig. 3 is ll the same as big. 1 with the enter covering y a longitujinel section l Pig. l. lig. l is a del tache view of the blade. Fig. 5 shows the l invention embodied in a four-blader! knife. ig. 6 is a side view of the knife with two blades, havingthe lining removed; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged longitudinall sectional view l showing a modification inwhieh the trigger may be concealed by the cover. g

The invention is adapted for use in knives having one, two, three, or four blades. Same construction is duplicated in order to removed. Fig. 3 is through the center of provide for the increased number nl' the lades. I have shown for convenience in Figs. l, 2, and 3 a knife 'lhe letters ol reference fen to the same parts in al l The outer portions or covers of the knife l are designated by the letter A. These cov-.l ers may be of any desired material, Snell as l wood, eelluloid, ivory, marl, or metal. The covers rest on a lining which I preferably i' make of thin sheet-brass. The linings are secured to theback (7 by rivets at a a and nrc provided with 'small rivets t, by means of which the covers are secured' to the linings. c large rivet c passes through the end o l" the knife and acts as-a pivot on which the blade D turns. The shank or tang of the blade is bored larger than the rivet c and provided with a bushing d. This bushing J is made slightly loner than the thickness of j thang-o the b ade, so the linings l will i rest on the bushing and will uw.

the tang. This construction permits en easy and fre-.e ni

the only friction being Where, the lining on"the bushing. If desired, the large rivet c inay be also used te secure caps Eat the'ends of the handle, as shoivn in big. 3.

lf is an actuating-spring, one end of which presses on the under sidel of the tangand is arranged to throw the blade when lreleased from a 'closed to an open' position. The spring F is held in place by a Iivetf, which passes through the inings. i

On the linings B nre two which is pivoted'a trigger G, turning pin fr.. T ie ears e g may be formed hving up a portion of the lining B ratc'and secured to the lining. Y On the outer face of. the lining is seeured spring H, oneend of which comes in contact with the trigger G sure thereon, which. thr

ovement of the blade onthe pivot'pg` and exerts a lifting pres# ows one end toward,

carey ynbetireen d the tang of the bladeuid tends to thrust the end of the trigger G, which terminates in a finger 2', into the cavities 7c and L" in the tang'.V The cavi tics k and are located in `msitio'ns to receive the fniger i when the b ade 4:D is fully open or closed, se it will be eutomati iosition.

the lining :is a means for actuating the trigf.

as i have found such cemenientiy answers the purpose," but it is apparent 1in: other means or kinds -of springs may be elripleyed for thrusting' 'up the inner end en' the trigger-sueln for instaure, as 'a s viral spring.

l'iihen the .niife is closed. a on the roughencd face of the G causes i press down the spring H, thereby Withdrawing the linger -i from the slot or hole k in th'e tang, which frees the blade and permits it to e thrown open bvthe spring F, and when the blade luis swung fully' open the hole or sliding pressure trigger or lever cover A and be s-e-I"reted-y l style of spring i have shown the flat spring H seeufredlo i l DQl to turn on :he center pin lp and slot 7c in'th tang will register with and re- ;"oeive the lfinger i, and thereby hold the blade 'pen. y the same operation of pressing fdown the spring H the trigger is raised from #thehinde Vwhen open. The blade is then ``ig`1i6|dily closed, when the finger i automatici leltiteisthe hole k and retains the blade in 'i .sd position.

u tfwllrbe readily seen that various modifitations ofthe device may be made without `.departf from the 'spirit of'niy invention. If "desrednie spring H may be connected with the lever G and operated by a very small butfton' resting thereon at some convenient 1'5 Apoint along its length, the trigger being entirelyeonceaied by the knife-cover, as shown ib, Fig. 7. Thespring H is secured to the ining bythe rivet m et one end and should *.avea slightainount of play where it conao nct .witnthe trigger G.

at I claim as my invention is-- :1 ,1 T111V a pocket-knife, V.automatic blade.- fdpeniu 'mechanism comprising a s ring-ac l'Mtuated' linking-trigger, substantial y asde- 2S `$`t1lbed,rocking on a pivot resting in sup `\Y. pp'its` secured to the l ning, said trigger being :pijovided with a finger at one end, adapted to [register and enter slots in the tang of the bladewhen said blade isopen and closed. o qQZffA pocket-knife comprisinga handle .Jlving a lining andecover, e blade mounted 11i the handle, a spring for actuating said a trigger pivoted in supports secured to the linings, means for holding one end of said trigger in engagement with the tang of the blade in its closed or open position, said blade,

trigger projecting outward through the cover ears ormed from the lining at a point adjaeent to the tang, said lever forming part of a device for locking the blade open or closed substantiall as shown and described. i 4. A poo et-knife comprising a handle having a lining and geven-. blade and actuating-spring mounted in said handle, atrigger pivoted in supports secured to the lining, a spring secured to the lining and operating said trigger and means for depressing said spring and rocking the trigger substantia ly as shown and described. i

5. In a pocket-knife provided with auto'- mutie blade-o ening mechanism, a tube lining the rivetiole in the tang, said tube extending past the face of the blade-tang Sub".4 stantially as and for the purpose shown .and

described. V f
