JOHN KILGORE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 84,427, dated November 24, -1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
The Schedule referred v1:0 in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may eoncewt:
Be it known that I, J om.Y C. KILGORE, of Philadelphia, in 'the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable 1mprovement in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description in cylinders or tubes connected with a water-reservoir encircling the same; and the object is to secure a constant supply of water in the tubes, and thereby pre- -vent explosions.
The invention consists mainly in constructing and adjusting a return-tube or siphon, of the form shown on the drawings, and hereinafter desciibed, with one end resting near the bottom 'oi the steam-tube, and the other resting near the bottom of the reservoir.
The letter A, of the drawings, represents the outside shell'of the boiler.
Letter B is the water-reservoir or chamber, and
Letters C are the steam-generating tubes.
' Letter D is the {ire-box, and
Letter E is the smoke-flue.
The water is supplied to the reservoir by a pipe leading into the same, near the bottom thereof.
The letter H is my return-tube or siphon. I prefer to construct it in the form shown on fig. 3, and extending from the bottom ofthe reservoir to the bottom of theV generating-tube.
The lower endsof this siphon are respectively cut open, and turned outward, as shown on iig. 4, thereby operator in ascertaining the state of the water forming something analogous to legs setting on the bot tom ofthe generator or reservoir, as the case may be and affording ready access for the water to the interior thereof. In case either end of the Siphon does not rest upon the bottom, the form of such end, as above described, may be dispensed with.
In some1-,ases the Siphon need not be extended down ward into a water-chamber, such as the drawings represent, but in all cases it must be connected with a water-reservoir of some description, and lead from such chamber' to a point near the'bottom of the steam-generating tube. I always adjust one of these siphons in each generating-tube.
The letter cis a foam-cap, attached to the curved part ofthe Siphon at the point, and in the manner and form shown on iig. 4, the office of which isv to break the foam, and prevent the water from being drawn into the steam-pipe. This foam-cap not only serves to quiet the water to a great extent, but also serves to aid the in the boiler. p
vThe letter P is a plate, on the inside of the irechamber, immediately in front of the smoke-flue, arn nged in such manner as' to form a supplemental chamber. Y
In burning bituminous coal, this plate becomes in tensely heated, and it serves not only as a means for detaining the gas in the fire-chamber, but also as an important auxiliary f or the combustion ofthe same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;-
- The foam-cap c, combined with the siphon H and tubes O, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J. O. KILGORE. Witnesses:
J. C. SMITH, C. W. TAYLOR.
