To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULES M. DE Oosrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Grange, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to presses of the type known as rebounding plunger, and has for its object the provision of improvements in this class of press consisting of improved mechanism for operating the plunger and also in providing mechanism by which two, three, four, or more strokes of the plunger may be secured at each rotation of the horsepower sweep.
The construction and operation of my invention will be clearly explained hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hay-press, showing my improved mechanismfor operating the plunger in position; Fig. 2, a side view, partly in section, of the press and operating mechanism and Fig. 3, a detail view of the plunger-operating mechanism.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 represents the ordinary construction of portable hay-press which is adapted to be conveyed from place to place, wheels 2 and draft-gear 3 being provided for that purpose. In the end of the press-box 4 are secured two uprights 5, spaced apart and provided with slots 6 of eccentric shape, as shown in Fig. 2.
7 represents the plunger, slidably mounted in the press-box 4 and having pivotally secured thereto pitman 8, having at its outer end a rack-bar 9 and on each side thereof rollers 10, that reciprocate in slots 6.
11 represents a spiral gear adapted to mesh with rack-bar 9 and journaled in the end of press-box 4, the construction of the eccentrically-shaped slots being such as to guide the rack-bar 9, so that the spiral gear 11 is always in mesh therewith.
12 represents a spring to normally hold the spiral gear in the position shown in Fig. 2 i. 6., so that the'plunger is in its receded position.
The power apparatus consists of a beam 13, to one end of which are secured cross-beams 14, notched, as shown, at 15, to receive the rear wheels of hay-press 1, while at the other end is secured a circular platform 16 and revolubly secured thereto turn-table 17, to which is secured a sweep 18, on which the draft-animalsv are attached. 19 represents a band of sheet metal securedto the edge of turn-table 17 and beyond the upper and lower faces thereof to form flanges 20.
21 represents a dog slidably mounted on the edge of turn-table 17 and having guides 22, consisting of metal clips bent over flanges 20.
23 represents a slot in dog 21, in which is mounted the long arm of an inverted-U- shaped catch 24. 25 represents notches in the upper surface of turn-table 17 adjacent to flange 20 to receive the other arm of catch 24. The number of notches shown in the machine, as illustrated, is two; but it will be readily understood that this number may be increased or diminished, as desired, and the circumference of the turn-table varied accordingly.
26 represents a guide-roller journaled on upright 27, secured to platform 16.
28 represents a block having a beveled face, up Which the lower end of the longer arm of inverted-U-shaped catch 24 rides, lifting the shorter arm of the catch out of notch 25, permitting dog 21 to return to its original position after each stroke of the plunger 7. 29 represents another block secured to platform 16 and positioned so as to stop the return motion of dog 21.
30 represents a rope secured to the outer end of spiral gear 11 and adapted to be secured to dog 21 by means of a hook 31 or other suitable fastening devlce.
32 represents a guide-pulley for rope 31, secured to beam 13.
In operation as the turn-table 17 revolves, actuated by the draft-animals attached to sweep 18, the catch 24 engages one of the notches 25 and the dog 21 is carried around by the turn-table until the longer arm of said catch 24 comes in contact with the beveled block 28, when it is lifted, raising the catch out of notch 25. While dog 21 is traveling with the turn-table spiral gear 11 actuates pitman 8 and with it plunger 7 but when the inverted-U-shaped catch 24 is raised out of notch 25, as above described, the spring 12 returns the plunger to its receded position ready for another stroke, the dog 21 being re turned to its ori inal position at the same time, it being understood that this operation is automatic.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a baling-press, a press-box, slotted uprights thereon, a plunger, a pitman secured to said plunger, a rack at the free end of said pitman, rollers on the sides ofsaid rack to ride in the slots in the uprights, a spiral gear journaled in the end of the pressboX, and engaging the rack aforesaid and means to actuate said spiral gear, substantially as shown and described.

In a baling-press, in combination with a portable wheeled press-box, a reciprocating plunger therein, and gearing to actuate said plunger, a power-transnzitter comprising a beam, cross-beams at one end thereof having notches to receive the wheels at one end of the pressboX, a turn-table at the other end of the beam, and operative connections between said turn-table and the plunger-gean;

8. In a baling-press, in combination with a press-box, a plunger therein, and gearing to actuate said plunger, a power-transmitter comprising a turn-table, a sweep secured thereto, a slotted dog slidably mounted on the edge of said turn-table, said turn-table provided with notches adjacent to its edge, a catch slidably mounted in the slot in said dog and adapted to engage the notches in the turn-table, and o erative connections between said dog an the plunger-gearing, substantially as shown and described' 4. 5. In a ba1ing-press, in combination with a portable, wheeled press-box, a reciprocating plunger therein, a pitman pivotally secured to said plunger havin a rack at its free end, and a spring-actuate spiral gear journaled in the end of said press-box and meshing with the rack on the pitman, a power-transmitter comprising a turntable, a sweep secured thereto, a slotted dog slidably mounted on the edge of said turntable, said turn-table provided with notches adjacent to its edge, a catch slidably mounted in the slot in said dog and adapted to engage the notches in the turn-table, a beveled block secured adjacent to said turn-table to engage said catch and raise it from engagement with the notch aforesaid, and a flexible element connecting said dog and the spiral gear, substantially as shown and described.
