Description
amt "sate paw (mm NATHANIEL IRISH, OF ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA. Letters Patent No. 84,421 dated November 24, 1868.
DEPROV'ED COMPOUND POR ROOF ING- AND PAiNTmG.
-o- I The Schedule referred to in thes'e hetters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom-it ma/y 0mm;
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL InIsH, of Rochester, in the county of Olmsted, and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Compound for Roofing and Painting;
and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof.
-My. invention consists in mixing certain ingredients, lllereinafter specified, to form acomponnd suitable for roofing, painting, and a Yanety of other pin'poses, so as to make the article to which it is applied perfectly impervious'to water. 7 V
5 .The ingredients used are, boiled linseed-oil, plaster of Paris, white or colored lead, "enice turpentine, and
water.
For roofing, they are mixed in the following propor- ,tions: Ten pounds plaster of Paris, one gallon water,
and a half pint boiled linseed-oil, to which add one-sixteenth part of. lead, and, to one gallon of the mixture thus made, one ounce of Venice turpentine.
i when, now, tempered to such a degree that it may be applied with a masons trowel, it is far superior, for roofing-purposes, 'to' any other compound now in use,
as it is perfectlyimpervious to water, and when it be 1' comes dry, will noterack and scale off.
, Forpainting, I take equal parts of lead and plaster Paris, with sufficient boiled; linseed-oil to render it suitable for applying with brush, after. which I may add the Venice turpentine.
I do not desire to confine myself to any exact proportion of these ingredients, as my invention embraces the art of mixing the above composition, both hard and soft, to suitthe different uses to which it may be applied. 7 V u Having thus fully described my invention,
What Irclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i s--' A compound, consisting of the above-mentioned ingredients, and used substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 21st day of September, 1868.
NATHANIEL IRISH/ Witnesses J. V. DANIELS, GFAS. SHAXDREW.
