THEODORE GARISIO, OF WEST HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
SELVAGE-FORIVHNG ATTACHMENT FOR LOOIVTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907'.
Application filed April 9, 1906. Serial No. 310,599.
To all Ll/7mm, it IN/[t7] concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE GARIsro, citizen of the United States, and resident of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Selvage- Forming Attachments for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to selvage-forming attachments for looms, and has particular reference to certain improvements on a selvage-forming attachment forming the subject-matter of an application filed by me October 18, 1904, Serial No. 229,041, which attachment is adapted for use on either dobby or Jacquard looms to form a selvage intermediate the edges of the warp, whereby double or multiple width fabrics can be woven.
The improvements forming the subjectmatter of my present application comprise certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth in detail, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, and in which like parts are designated by like reference characters, Figure 1 represents a selvage-forming attachment embodying a preferred form ofmy invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail views showing open sheds with the selvage-thread carried at opposite sides of the warp-threads by my improved selvage-forming attachment.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 3 and 4, 1 is the warp-beam, 2 and 3 a pair of warpthreads, 4 and 5 heddles that lift said threads, 6 the lay, and 7 the reed, all of usual construction, either of a dobby or Jacquard loom. 8 is a selvage-thread spool, from which the selvage-thread 9 passes through the eye 11 of the selvage-forming mechanism and through the reed with the warpthreads.
. In some cases it is necessary, depending upon the structure of the loom, to insert a selvage-thread guide 10 to keep this thread as much as possible clear of the shed. At the proper place in the width of the warp-say at the center when weaving double-width fab ric having a center selvagethis thread is started through the eye 11 of the selvagethread carrier and from thence through the reed to the goods-beam. (Not shown.) The .selvage-thread eye 11 is at the upper end of the selvege-thread carrier, comprising the eye 11, loop 30, shank I), and eye 17, all formed of a single piece of wire, the lower end of the loop 30 being a straight twisted shank portion 1), ending in an eye 17, that is connected to the retracting-spring 31 or weight, as the case may be, to always pull the loop and selvage-thread down below the shed.
On the right-hand portion or member of the loop 30that is, that portion of the loop to the right of eye 11-there is a selvagethread lifter comprising a twisted wire 32, having a loop 15 at its lower end, and just above this loop a loop or open twist 33, above which is the twisted shank 32, terminating in an eye 18, to which is attached the harness cord 24 going to the dobby or the jacquard, as the case may be. Through the open twist 33 of the selvage-thread lifter passes the loop 34 of the selvage-thread retractor, terminating in a downwardlyeXtending twisted wire shank 35, having an eye 12 at its lower end to which is attached a retracting-spring 36 or a weight, as the case may be. To the left-hand side of the loop is attached similar mechanism, but working oppositely to that of the right-hand mechanism just described and consisting of a loop 16 at the lower end of the twisted wire shank 37, having at its upper end an eye 19, to which is attached a lifting harness-cord 25, connected to the dobby or jacquard mechanism, as the case may be. Just above the loop 16 is an eye or open twist 38, which receives a loop 39 of a twisted wire shank 40, terminating in an eye 13, retracted by a spring 41 or a weight, as the case may be. It will thus be seen that there are two selvage-thread lifters operating alternately, one for each opening of the shed as well as their retractors. Between the selvage thread spool and the eye 11, or in the case where a guide-rod 10 is used between the spool 8 and the guide-rod 10, is the porcelain eye 23, connected by the spring 22 to the warp-thread guide-rod 21.
The operation of the device is as follows: At or before the time the shed has been formed, Fig. 3, the parts will be in the position shown, the selvage-thread 9 being on this side of the warp- threads 2 and 3. When the shed is closed and opened in the opposite direction, the loop 30 has been free to be pulled down by its spring 31 upon releasing of the harness-cord 24. When in its lowermost position and the shed is completed or nearly completed, the cord 25 is pulled, wire The construction and operation of the selvage-forming attachment as thus far described is the same as that of the attachment forming the subject-matter of my said prior application, Serial No. 229,041. In the use of the said prior attachment, however, it was found that the upper end of the selvagethread carrier, by reason of being engaged by the lifters at either side of its central thread-receiving eye, formed a laterally-projecting shoulder at one side of the lifters which at each upward stroke of the carrier between the warp threads would have a tendency to catch and break said threads. In accordance with my present invention. I avoid possibility of such catching and breaking of the thread by the thread-carrier by forming the carrier-engaging loop of each of the lifters with a short bend or oifset at or adjacent to its end, as at 50, whereby when the lifter is in operative lifting engagement with the thread-carrier at the upper end of that side of the carrier-loop 30 on which it slides and in position at one side of the center of the carrier-eye 11, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the said bend of oilset will locate or position that portion of the lifter rising above the carrier about central of the latter, and so prevent said carrier, by reason of its upper rounded surface, from presenting any shoulder at the side of the lifter sufficiently abrupt to catch and break the adjacent warp thread or threads, as will be obvious upon reference to Fig. 2.
A further feature of my present invention. consists in forming the loops 34 and 39 of the retractors with a short bend or offset 6 adjacent to their ends or point of connection with the lifters, as clearly shown in Figs. 1
and 2, whereby the retractors and lifters will both draw in a straight line under the action of their actuating devices and avoid tendency to assume an angular position relatively to each other, as is the case when the retractorloops are made straight as in the attachment of my said prior application.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A selvage forming attachment for looms, comprising a selvage-thread carrier having two extensions, and a lifter slidable on each of said extensions and being provided with a bend or offset to position that part of the lifter extending beyond the carrier in line about central of the latter, for the purpose set forth.
2. A selvageforming attachment for looms, comprising a loop having a selvagethread eye at one end, and a lifter slidable on each member of said loop and being provided. with a bend or offset to position that part of the lifter extending beyond the said eye in line about central of the latter, for the purpose set forth. I
3. A selvageforming attachment for looms, comprising a wire loop having a selvage-thread eye at one end, and a wire lifter slidable on each member of said loop and being provided with a bend or offset to position that part of the lifter extending beyond the said eye in line about central of the latter, for the purpose set forth.
a. A selvage-forming attachment for looms, comprising a selvage-thread carrier, a pair of wire lifters slidable on said carrier, and wire retractors connecting with said lifters, the said retractors each being provided with a bend or offset adjacent to its point of connection with the lifter, for the purpose set forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 31st day of March, A. D. 1906.
