Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
- Application filed January 10, 1907. Serial No. 351,581.
1'0 all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, ETHEL ERT A. Rus- DEN, a'citizenof the United States, residing in the town of Warren, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolls for Finishing Paper and Textile Goods, of which the following is a description.
Calender and mangle rolls have been made of various materials and various combinations of materials, such as paper, cotton, &c. Attempts have been made to make them also of asbestos. All such attempts have, however, failed because of the impossibility of preventing the fiber from slipping upon itself and working out of the roll. By combining the asbestos with cotton -fiber in proper proportions, however, the cotton will from its special structure and properties serve to prevent the asbestos from thus working out and destroying the roll and make it" possible at the same time to obtain a roll possessing the polishing effect of the asbestos constituent-,thus, together with its fireproof peculiarities, preserving the roll from destruction as the resultof the heat of friction.
The accompanying drawing represents the section of a roll having a central iron or steel shaft A- through it and extending from the ends of the roll proper to rest in the bearings of a calender or other frame.
B represents the suitably-compressed mixture of cotton and asbestos.
In making the roll the cotton and asbestos are thoroughly mixed together, placed about 'the shaft A, pressed down by hydraulic pressure, and afterward turned down to the proper size in alathe in the usual manner of. 1 making smnlar rolls of other materials.
I claim as my own invention A fimslung-roll composed of a mlxture of cotton and asbestos, as described.
