Kif/Q @time g CHARLES L. COLE, OF RICHMOND, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND THOMAS JOHNSON, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 84,261, dated November 24, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-WHEEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.'
To whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. COLE, of Richmond, in the county of Macomb, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Spinning-Wheels; and I do declare that the-following is a true and accurate description thereof, Areference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters .of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification. v Y
The objectofethis invention is to so construct spin-'S ning-Wheels that the operator may remain seated and stationary, and prevent the necessity ofwalking ,towards the spindle, after the yam is spun, to wind thesame. This is don'e by the mechanism, hereinafter described, operated by treadles, which cause the spindle, to advance to and recede from theoperator, as desired..
v In order to accomplish this end, I construct a proper frame, A, upon which is mounted, by proper standards,
. by Letters Patent, is-
B, the driving-wheel C, to which motion is communi` municated by means of the crank D. y l
The spindle E is suitably attached to the head E," which, in turn, is secured to the support Gr, Whichis` fastened to the friction-wheel H, properly secured to the rock-shaft I, upon which are also placed properI pulleys, by means of which andthe belts J and K, -mo-.. 1 vtion iscommunicated to the whole from thev driving- Witnesses:
wheel. C.
Another wheel, L, is secured to the rock-shaft, M, Y properly journalled in the frame A, near the position of the operator, when using'the machine.
A belt, N, passes over this wheel L, its lower ends being secured to the treadles O and P. J
To this rock-shaft M are secured the arms Q and R, to the outer ends of which are journalled the frictionwheels S and T, which are provided with proper pul- "press his foot upon the treadles, which will partially rotate the rock-shaft M, and compel, alternately, the face of the frictionavheels S and T to engage ,with the face of the friction-wheel H, which will throw the spindle forward or back, as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure The .rock-shaft M, wheel L, friction-Wheels H, S, and T, arms Q and R, belts N, U, and V, and treadles O aud P, whenl arranged relatively to each other, as here' in described, in connection with any hand-spinning `Wheel, vand operating as and for the purposes substantially as set forth.
' CHARLES L. COLE.
