Be it known that I, LLOYD G. HooN, a citi* Zen of the United States, residing at Belle Center, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fastening Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures' of reference marked thereon, which vform a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway-rails and means for fastening the same, and comprises a movable tread-section provided with a groove in the under surface thereof which is adapted to fit over the upper edgeof the web and designed to be anchored by means of cement.
My invention comprises various details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a crosssectional view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the apparatus with the rail-section attached thereto before being embedded in the cement.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a plate, of metal, which is supported upon edge by means of the standards B, having fianges B projecting therefrom and between which the lower edge of said plate or web is held uponA.
C designates a rail, the exterior of the under surface of which has the appearance of ordinary rails and is provided with a longitudinal channel in the lower surface thereof, which channel extends up through the web of the rail. Apertures are formed in the web of the rail and also in said plate, and through said registering apertures bolts D are adapted to be passed after the rail has been placed over the upper edge of the plate, and nuts E, fitted upon threaded ends of the bolts, cooperate with the bolt to draw the kweb portions ofthe rail, in clamping relation with the opposite faces of the plate.
The rail being fastened to the plate in the manner shown and described, the space intermediate the standard and the under side of the rail is filled with a cement F, the upper surface of which cement forms a support for the bottom of the rail. l
By the provision of the rail and fastening apparatus therefor, as shown and described, it will be noted that the rail-sections may be easily and quickly removed and When desired to be replaced or for any other purpose and when adjusted in place will be securely anchored to the cement filling and also to the plate embedded therein.
While my .rail is especially adapted for crossings, it will be understood that a continuous line may be constructed in accordance with my invention, if desired.
Especially is my patent adapted to. streetrailways, forthe reason that rails may be removed when worn and new rails put in position without disturbing the road-bed.
1. In combination with a rail having the under surface thereof channeled, a plate, standards having fianges between which said plate is held upon edge, the upper edge of said plate adapted to engage said channel and a filling intermediate the rail and the standards and about said plate, as set forth.
2. In combination with a rail having the under surface thereof channeled, a plate, standards having fianges between which said plate is held upon edge, the upper edge of said plate adapted'to engage said channel, a cement filling in which said standards and plate are embedded and forming a surface uponfwhich the flanges of the rail are adapted to rest and fastening-bolts passing through registering apertures of the web of the rail and plate, as set forth.
