BERT E. SALISBURY, OFv SYRAOSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO PASS &
SEYMOUR, INCORPORATED, OF SOLVAY, NEW YORK, AA CORPORA` TION OF NEW YORKT `FusoEP-TACLE Fon INCANDESCENT ELECTRIC LAMPS.
Specication-of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22', 19er.
Application ledAugiist 13,1905..- Serial No. 274,459.
To @ZZ whom it 'may concern.-
,Be it known that I, BERT E. SALIsBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syraeuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of `New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Incandescent Electric Lam s; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full', clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;-
M invention relates to receptacles for incan escent electric lamps for use in electric signs and other locations so constructed that the line-wires are easily and securely connected and when so connected are perfectly insulated and secured. v
A single peculiarly-formed block of porcelain or other suitable insulating material 2o4 forms the base on which are secured the lampterminals and the wiresterminals f The latter are arranged to extend into parallel grooves in the rear of the. porcelain b ase, in which grooves are arranged the line-wires. Small portions only of these wires are stripped, which portions are easily' arranged to be engaged by the ,binding-screws on each side and when so arranged are covered by insulatingcement filling the grooves more or less, by which a perfect connection is made `and the joint securely covered and Aprotected andI made Waterproof' without the troublesome and inconvenient use of tape.
A desirable form of receptacle embodying my invention is shown in the drawings herewith, in' which the reference-numerals of the specification indicate the corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively side elevation and rearplan of the receptacle. Figx3 is a vertical section thereof, and Fig.A 4 1s a cross-section on section-line 4 of Fig. 3.
In theiigures, 1` indicates the porcelain base, having ears 2 to receive thebolts 3 for securing the receptacle to the sign-plate 4.
Other suitable securing means may be used.
The rear of the baseis formed with parallel ing-screws 8 8 to make connection with the respective wire-terminals `9 10, whose ends maybe slightly bent, as shown, the more securely to retain the wires in place.. The base may be provided with extensions 11 1,1, as
shown, to afford more room for the grooves,
to give good separation between the metallic parts, and to strengthen the device.
13 is the outer threaded lamp-terminal, set v l on the branched wire-terminal 9 and there secured by screws 14 14.4
' 15 is the central lamp-terminal, which may other suitable formsecured in place by bolt connection with Wire-terminal 10.Y
17 represents cut-outs in the porcelain for the tips of the binding-screws. When the receptacle has been set in position and the wires connected, the grooves are iilled more or less with the insulating-cement 19, by which the joint of the binding screws and wires is made secure and well protected from accidental contact and short-circuits and from all moisture without tape or other protection on the rear of the receptacle.
The front of the receptacle may desirably be formed with an annular shoulder 20 to fit againstthe sup orting-plate when the receptacle is arrange on the back thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what be in the form of a split resilient washer or of I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an electric receptacle, the combination with a porcelain base, having a cylindricai centr portion, opposite side extensions on the back part of the receptacle and parallel -grooves in said extensions on the rear, wire-terminals having their outer ends arranged in said grooves and their inner ends extending into amouth on the front of the base being also provided with integral, perp forated securing-ears, substantiallyV as described and shown.l
In a device Aof the character described,
v the combination with a receptacle havin la porcelain base formed with a front V'annu ar v'shoulder and With parallel grooves on its rear giace, and having lamp-terminals secured onV the base, and Wire-terminals secured on the .base to extend into the respective crossgrooves and connected' to the respective lamp-terminals, of a supporting-plate iitted' io to said 'annular shoulder, wires arranged in `the grooves and secured-to the respective wire-terminals, and insulating-cement in the Agrooves c'overing'- the Wires secured to the' wire-terminals therein.
3. In an electric receptacle, the'combina-, tion with a porcelain base, having acylin-i drical central portion,` 'op osite, imperforatel side extensions at the bac ofthe lreceptacle and parallel cross-grooves in therear faces of zo said extensions, Wire-terminals having their outer ends arranged in said grooves, Iand their inner ends extending into a mouth. formed in said cylindrical portion, an outer "lamp-terminal arranged in said mouth and 2 5 connected to the inner end of one wire-terminal, a single screw forming a central lampterminal arranged in said mouth and engaging with the opposite Wire-terminal to secure -tlie same in position, and integral, opposite 3o ears on, thebase adjacent to the front end for securing the receptacle in position.
4. In an electric receptacle, the combination with a porcelain base, having a cylindrical central portion, opposite side extenp 3 5 sions at the'back vof the receptacle and parallel cross-grooves in the rear faces of said extensions, wire-terminals having their outer endsv arranged in said grooves, and their inner ends extending' into a mouth formed in 4o said cylindrical portion, an outer lamp-terminal arranged in said mouth and connected te the inner end of one wire-terminal, a single scrw"'forining a central lamp-terminal arranged in said mouth and engaging with the 4 5' opposite' Wire-terminal to secure the same in position, and iieans arranged adjacent to the front end of the cylindrical .portion to secure the receptacle in place. j
5. In a device ojthe character described,
5o an electric sign-plate having a circularhole to receive the front end of an electric receptacle, and the receptacle having in combination a porcelain bas'e formed with a substantially cylindrical main portion, a shoulder or 5 5 shoulders on the front end of said main portion to engage with the iear face of the signplate-,a substantially cylindrical short, front end, projecting forwardly from the main portion into the hole in the sign-plate, opposite 6o side extensions on the rear end of the main portions, cross-grooves onthe rear surface of the base and of the extensions ,and with a front-opening mouth in the main portion,
