ROTARY WOOD-PLANING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed March 23,1906. Serial No. 307.639.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. PLUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rainier, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary I/Vood-Planing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in whichd Figure l is a front elevation of devices embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3, respectively, are end and cross-sectional views of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a hook suitable for withdrawing the several cutter-knives from the head.
The object of the invention is the improveent in the cutters and the heads therefor of wood-planing machines, and to this end consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, A designates a cutterhead or cylinder for a planing-machine and is formed with or mounted upon an aXially-disposed driving-arbor B. Provided in the periphery of said head is a number of slots C, extending spirally the entire length thereof and adapted to receive the cutterknives D. These knives are of relatively thin steel blades and are each provided, desirably, with oppositely-disposed beveled cutting edges E. The knives are retained in the respective said slots by means of metal strips or keys, such as F, which are inserted endwise into registering grooves II and I, respectively, in the opposing faces of the slots and knives. The groove in each of the knives is arranged centrally thereof to make the latter reversible and also to prevent the cutting edge, w 'ch is within a socket, from contacting with the bottom of its slot.
rIhe knives and keys after being respectively seated and engaged are secure against longitudinal dis lacement by means of covering-plates K, w ich are held against the ends of the head by any suitable means, such as nuts L, which are screwed upon threads provided therefor on the arbor. One or both of these covering-plates are provided with spaced cut-away portions K', which are disposed in such a relation as to be capable of being brought opposite the adjacent ends of the slots C by giving the plate or plates a partial rotation and which can be accomplished after loosening the respective said securing-nuts. When the ends of the said slots are thus exposed, the cutter-knives may be conveinently drawn out of the slots by mea'ns of hook I), inserted through the notches S and engaging each knife in an aperture R provided. rIhe periphery of the -head in advance of the several knife-slots is advantageously recessed, as at M, for the purpose of providing for the turning of the chips as they are severed from the work. While the keys are preferably made with a circular cross-section, as shown in FigS, I do not wish it to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction, as other forns may obviously be utilized for the same en s.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a cutter-head provided in its periphery with a plurality of spirally-arranged slots, knives adapted to be seated in said slots, means to key the said knives in their respective slots, and coveringplates adapted to be secured against the ends of the head for preventing the displacement of the said knives and said means to key the knives.
2. The combination of a cutter-head provided in its periphery with a plurality of spirally-arranged slots, knives having oppositely-disposed cutting edges and adapted to be seated in said slots, means to key the said knives in their respective slots, and coveringplates adapted to be secured against the ends of the headfor preventing the displacement of the said knives and said means to key the knives.
3. The combination of a cutter-head provided in its periphery with a plurality of sp1- rally-arranged slots, knives adapted to be seated in said slots, a strip for each knife and adapted to secure the same by engaging in a groove therein and also in the opposing face of the respective slot, and covering-plates provided with spaced cut-away portions adapted to register with the ends of said knives and strips and adapted to be secured against the l ends of the head for preventing the displacement of the said knives and strips.
4. The combination with the cutter-head. provided with spirally-arranged peripheral slots, of knives adapted to be seated in said slots and each provided with an aperture in proximity to one of its ends, means for securing said knives in place against accidental IOO IIO
displacement, and means engageable in the said apertures for withdrawing the knives from their respective said slots.
5. A cutter-head having peripheral slots, knives seated in said slots, keys to secure said knives, plates secured against the head. ends to engage the ends of the knives, said plates each having cut-away portions spaced at intervals whereby when said plates are -ro- .tated all of said `knives will have their ends exposed.
6. A cutterhead having yperipheral slots, an arbor for said head, knives seated `in said slots, keys .to secure the knives, plates yhaving spaced notches about their plates having their portions between said notches for engagement with the knife ends and adapted when rotated to have all of the knife ends register with said notches, and
nuts on the arbor engaging said plates and zo retaining the same in engagement with the ends of the head.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
