` D.iToHiNGm/ACH:NE. l
Scottsbluff, in the county of Scotts Bluff and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Ditching-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
j This invention relates tc ditching-ma chines; and it has particular reference to an improved machine of this class for forming small.,clitches, channels, or trenches for subirrigation purposes, said trenches being for the purpose of conveying water from the main irrigatingditches over the field that is to be irrigated without making it necessary to completely overflow or inundate the same,
the object .of the invention being to provide a device of this class whichl shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, duv
rability, and general eiiiciency. i
With these and other ends in view, which Will readily appear as the nature oi the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the improved constructionand novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and. preferred.. form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations, and modiiica tions Within the scope of the invention may be made when desired.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ditching-machine constructed in accordance with the principles of the inven tion. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Corresponding parts in both the iigures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
A suitably-constructed frame 1, preferably j of .rectangular shape, is provided with bearings for a shaft 2, carrying a plurality of lenticular or double-convex disks 3 3, which are mounted adjustably upon said shafts, as by ,j means of set-screws 4 extending through the lhubs 5 of the disks. spaced upon the shaft at various distances apart, and any desired number of the 1disks, l may be mounted upon the shaft.
The latter may thus be The frame is provided with bearings 6 for a rock-shaft 7, having a crank 8, upon which `l are` mounted a plurality of standards 9, car- Specification of Letters Patent.

j rying bull-tongue plows `10 or furrow-openers of any approved construction, one of the standards being arranged directly in front of each of the disks 3. The standards 9 are preferably provided with eyes 11, whereby they are pivoted upon the crank of the rockshaft, and the latter is preferably provided with collars 12, having set-screws 13, Whereby they may be secured for the purpose of retaining the standards at various' adjustments infront ofthe disks. Upon the front side of the frame there are secured a plurality of straps or loops 14, serving to confine the standards 9, said loops being preferably inclined in a vforward and upward direction, so that they will not interfere with the vertical adjustment of the standards 9. `In order to eilect such adjustment, a lever is provided, said lever being pivoted upon a quadrant 16, which has been illust-rated as secured upon a tongue 17, which extends longitudinally through the frame and which carries a seat 18 for the driver or operator. The fulcrum of the lever is in a pprokimate alinement with the hearingsof the rock-shaft 7, and one lend of said lever is pivoted upon the crank 8,
stitutes a handle, carries a stop member 19, engaging the lquadrant 16 for the purpose of retaining the lever and related parts at various adjustments. Y
By manipluating the lever 15 the cranked rock-shait may be operated so as to raise or lower the plows; When the latter are lowu ered, they will form iurrows in the soil in advance of the disks, which latter, traveling in the urrows, will deepen the said furrows and compress and compact the soil. ditches or trenches are made to connect the irrigatingditches, and they Will serve to convey the waterfroin the irrigating-ditches over the portion of the field in which the subirrigating-ditches are formed.
Bv the use oi this invention much Water' Willube saved and much labor Will also be saved in the preparation and cultivation-of.

In a ditching-machine, a rock-shaft, blade-carrlying standards pivotally engaging adjustable upon a crank formed and latera 1 l my own I have hereto afixed my signature in upon said rook-shaft, means for oscillating the rock-shaft, loops conin'ing and guiding the standards, .a shaft located behind the 15 plows and laterally-adjustable Wheels l0- vcated upon the last-said shaft.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the presence of tWo Witnesses."
