UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH l/V. ODONNELL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF -ONE- HALF TO M. W. EISER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
ANIUSEIVIENT APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed February 23, 1906. Serial No. 302,508.
T0 all wiz/011e t may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. ODONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to an amusement apparatus, and more particularly to an apparatus of the class described which is especially adapted for parks or outdoor amusement resorts.
My apparatus consists primarily in an artificial waterfall arranged between towers or abutments, win ding stairways and spectacular devices being provided within the towers, walks arranged between the towers, beneath the waterfall, and means provided for throwing colored lights on the descending water.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus which will be both amusing and instructive and to accomplish the desired re sult in the simplest manner possible.
I have illustrated my apparatus in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this s ecification, in which like reference-numer a s refer to like parts throughout the several vie ws, and in which# Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus constructed according to my invention, a part of the waterfall being broken away to illustrate the interior walks. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the apparatus, the towers being shown in cross-section. Fig. 3 is a front ele-y vation of the parts behind the waterfall and showing the towers in central vertical section. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the waterfall looking toward one of the towers. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one form of water-discharging apparatus. Fig. 6 is a modified form of discharging apparatus. Fig. 7 is a second modification of the discharging apparatus.
Referring more in detail to the parts, 1 2 represent the towers or abutments, which may be of any suitable form or material, an ornamental stone effect being preferred. Between towers 1 and 2 is a tiered structure comprising the water-discharging platform 3, a lower platform 4, forming a suitable walk and having a hand-rail 5, and a third platform 6, forming the lower walk, which is provided with the hand-rail 7, the front of the entire structure having a natural-rock effect to represent the back of a natural waterfall.
Both the towers 1 and 2 are chambered throughout their height, and tower 1 is provided with entrances 8, into which persons who have secured proper tickets may enter and following the walk 9 in the tower may pass out onto the lower walk 6, over which they pass to the entrance 10 of tower 2. In tower 2, leading from the en trance, is a spiral walk 11, which winds around a central wall 12, having openings through which the amusement seekers may peer` down upon a subterranean lake, which may be suitably illuminated. At the end of walk 11 is an exit 13, through which the pedestrians may pass onto walk 4, which slopes downwardly, ending in the exit 14 in or adjacent to tower 1.
In tower 1 is located a pump 15, which raises water from the lake in front of the waterfall to a tank 16 in the top of the tower.
17 is a pipe leading from tank 16 and eX- tending across platform 3 to tower 2 and having perforations therein through which the water is delivered to the incline 3, over which it flows in a stream and descends in a picturesque waterfall to the lake, the incline and force of the water carrying it over the pedestrians as they travel over the walks 4 and 6. In the sides of the towers are located suitable devices for throwing lights on the waterfall, and a suitable lantern may throw views on the front of the falls, if desired.
It is the intention to give the whole as attractive and decorative appearance as possible, and for this purpose forts, lighthouses, and similar structures may be supplied, a suggestion to the effect being shown in the drawings.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An amusement device comprising a set of towers, a waterfall therebetween, and walks arranged in said towers, and beneath said waterfall.
2. An amusement device comprising a set of towers, having a set of platforms arranged therebetween, a suitable pipe extending ICO IOS
above said platforms .and having dischargeopenings therein, means for supplying water t'osaidgpipe, and a runway vadapted to receive the water from said pipe, substantiallyT as, and for the purpose set forth.
3. An amusement device comprising a set of chambered towers having walks extending therebetween, a spiral incline within one of said towers, connecting its inlet and outlet openings, suitable entrance and exit openingsin the other tower, and a waterfall extending between said towers and over their connecting-walks. y
4. An amusement device .comprising a set of chambered towers having walks extending therebetween, a spiral incline within one `of said towers connecting its inlet .and outlet opening, a Well within said spiral incline, suitable lentrance and exit .openings in the other tower, and a waterfall vvextending between said towers and overtheir connecting- Walks.
5. An amusement device comprising a set of chambered towers having walks extending therebetween, a spiral incline within-one of .said towers, a tank within .the other tower, a pipe extending over said walks and connect- JOSEPH W. ODONNELL. Witnesses E. E. CARPENTER, A. M. MAXWELL.
