VARIABLE SPEED MECHANISM- TO all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS THIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati,
in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Variable-Speed l \lechanism,' of which the following is a specification."
My invention relates. to a variable-speed mechanism and box therefor,
. primarily adapted'to be used in connection withmachine-tools, such as a n1illing-machine, but also applicable to other uses employing mechanism of this type. a y In machine tools in particular it is highly desirable that. the variable speed gearing cone of gear-wheels and a tumbler with its gear-wheels adapted to slide longitudinally and to rock radially relative to the cone, so as to throw into train the driving and driven shafts through the intermeshing of gears of selected ratio. In the specific arrangement of this general cone and tumbler system which I have devised there is one shaft adapted-t'o be rocked to accomplish'the sliding movement" and another shaft adapted to be rocked to accomplish the swinging movement of the tumbler mechanism.

The front end of rock-shaft-Ai is provided with a cranlehandle 51, having-a detent mechanism 52, engaging withthe segmentally-arranged orifice 53 of the index-plate 20. The orifices 53 represent the different lateral positions of adjustment of the tumbler relative to the steps of I the cone.
-'From this description it Will be understood that by manipulating the lever 21 three 'different rates of drive may be imparted to the cone-shaft? 5 By'manipulating the lever 51 the tumbler mechanism andthe segmental rocking mechanism on shaft 37.1nay be ad- I justed laterally on shaft 32 and 37 to bring the tumbling gear-wheel 'laterally opposite any selected gear-Wheel of: the cone, and then manipulating the lever the tumbler :mechanism may be rocked to intermesh tumbling gear-wheel 35 with the selectedgear-wheel of the cone.
'It will thus be seen that I have provided for quite a Wide range-of changes in a very compact gear-box and that the manipulatinglevers forshifting the engaging and disengaging gear-Wheels are conveniently arranged so as to operate rock-shafts 1ournaled 1n the gear-box, and the rock-shafts are connected to the shifting gear elements interior of the box.
- Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a variable-speed device an inclosing box, a cone and tumbler gear-wheel system suitably mounted therein, a rock-shaft j ournaled in the box, a segmental gear mounted to box, a cone and tumbler gear system suitably mounted therein, a driving-shaft also mounted in said box, slid ng gears of difi'erent diameter on the slidmgshaft adapted to be selectively intermeshed with difierent i'n'embers' of the cone ofgears, a rock-shaft and mechani'sm for sliding thesaid' gears onthe sliding shaft,a second rock-shaft j ournaled in the box,
- I a segmental gear mounted to turn with and slide on the rock-shaft the tumbler having a segmental gear'engaging with the segmental gear of the rock-shaft, a manipulating indexing-lever for. the second rock shaft, and a third rock-shaft mounted in the-box ad apted to slide the. said segmental gears in unison,
