NEOTICUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Applicationfiled June 17,1905. Serial No. 265,633-
Patented. Jan. 8, 1907.
T0 on whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORRIN HENRY SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Applying Sterilizers to Mouthpieces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to devices for applying sterilizers to mouthpieces, and comprises improvements in the form of said devices and providing for'the use of the mouth. pieces without necessarily o crating the sterilizing devices in order to al ow free access to said mouthpieces.
My invention also provides improved means whereby said devices may be readily attached to or detached from the mouthpieces.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a telephone-mouthpiece, a central vertical transverse cross-section of asterilizing device being also shown, part of the mouthpiece being broken away for that purpose. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the elements which are shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the device closed, with the mouthpiece shown in section.
Reference characters are relatively alike throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a mouthpiece of a form sometimes used in combination with receivers of telephones.
b is an annulus which extends across the outer opening of the mouthpiece a and a part of which in the general form of the inside of the mouthpiece a extends inwardly of the latter. An absorbent annulus c, which is adapted both in form and dimensions to closely surround the inwardly-extending part of the annulus b, is held in such position by a retaining-annulus d, said annulus (i being retained in its proper position by any suitable means-such, for instance, as frictional engagement of its peripheral surface with the .surface of=the inner wall of the annulus b.
A collar 6 is adapted both in form and dimensions to closely surround a part of the peripheral surface of the outer wall of the mouthpiece a and is hinged to the annulus b. A suitable catch, herein shown and referred to as f, is firmly attached to the annulus 1),
preferably opposite the hinge which connects the latter to the collar e. The latter should preferably be formed of material that is at least to some extent resilient. It with the annulus b, to which it is hinged, forms a clamp which, the parts thereof being firmly held together by means of the catch f, may firmly clamp the mouthpiece a, and thus secure the whole device in an operative position. The outer rim of the collar 6, as shown, is inclosed within the rim of the annulus b when the device is secured upon the mouthpiece a in position for use.
The operation of my invention may be readily inferred from the preceding description thereof if it be understood that a suitable sterilizing liquid be applied in a suitable quantity to and be absorbed bythe absorbent annulus c and that the sterilizing device be thereafter clamped to the mouthpiece a by means of the hinged collar e, the rim whereof engages the catch f. The sterilizing device being positioned as thus described, with a suitable sterilizing liquid applied in sufiicient quantity to the absorbent annulus c, the complete sterilization of the interior surfaces of the mouthpiece a and of the sterilizing device will be maintained until the sterilizing liquid shall either have evaporated or become inert, in either of which events the device may by a slight pull be opened outwardly from the mouthpiece a, a new supply of sterilizing liquid may be applied to the absorbent annulus c, and the device may be reattached to the mouthpiece a by engaging the collar 6 with the catch It should be noted that this device may be used without the absorbent annulus c and retaining-annulus d if the sterilizing substance, which may, for instance, be in the form of a plastic or pasty substance, be applied directly to the surface of the inwardlyextending part of the annulus b.
I claim as new and as my invention 1. A device for applying sterilizers to mouthpieces and comprising an annulus which is attachable to a mouthpiece and has a part which is adapted to extend inwardly of the mouthpiece and a collar which surrounds the periphery of the mouthpiece and is hinged to the annulus and with the latter clamps the device in an operative position.
2. A device for applying sterilizers to mouthpieces and comprising an annulus annulus which surrounds said inwardly-extending part; a collar which is hinged to the first-mentioned annulus; and a catch which is attached to said annulus, all being so arranged as to clamp the device to the outer extremity of the mouthpiece.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
