PAPER ROLL HOLDER.

UNITED TATES PATENT orrron.
PAPER-ROLL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed November 6,1906. Serial No. 342,271-
T at whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE Y. OTTO, a
' citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Williamsport, county of Lycoming, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Roll Holders, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse section. on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of the latch-carrying member of the shaft.
The object of this invention is to improve andsimplify the shaft for carrying a roll and to provide a simple form of friction-brake device.
The shaft is journaled, as usual, in the arms a a of the holding-frame and consists of two members 7) and 0, each of which is flanged at its outer end at d to maintain it in its proper position in the frame. The member I) is cored out centrally from its inner end toward its outer end, and within this cylindrical chamber is formed an annular groove e.
The member 0 of the shaft has its inner end abutted against the inner end of the member I) and is provided with a reduced extensionf, which fits within the cylindrical axial recess in the member I). This extension f extends beyond the annular groove e. This member 0 is provided with a longitudinal slot extending transversely through it, and in. this slot is mounted a pair of latch members g, shouldered at h, so that their forward ends shall come flush with the surface of the extension f. The extreme forward or inner ends of The latch members are normally sprung outward by means of a spring Z, inclosed between them. The outward movement of the latches is limited by a shoulder m at the outer end of each latch.
With the construction described it will be observed that the shaft-sections are locked together on the roll by simply pressing the latch members 9 inward sufliciently to permit the hooked ends 1', thereof to pass within the hollow section, and then when the hooks 'i reach the annular groove they snap into the same, and thus lock the parts together.
It will be observed that the latch members cannot be reached after the shaft is once slipped into a roll of paper and locked until the pap er is entirely unwound from the shaft.
It will be observed that by employing an annular locking-groove e and the peculiar latch devices shown the shaft-sections may be telescoped without registering or other adjustment of the parts to each other.
A flat brake-ring n surrounds the shaft at one end and is provided with an, extension 0, which extends backwardly and is attached to the inner face of the adjacent arm a. A screw p is swiveled to the arm or extension 0 and is threaded through the adjacent arm a and is provided at its outer end with a winged head q, wherebythe pressure on the end of the roll of paper may be readily regulated, so that sufficient pressure may at all times be maintained to prevent the paper paying off too rapidly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shaft for a paper-roll holder comprising two members, one having an axial recess, which recess is provided with an annular groove or channel at a distance from the inner end of the member, and the other member slotted longitudinally and carrying in said slot a pair of latch members having beveled hooked ends, a spring between the members, a pivot on which both members are pivoted at their outer ends, each member being shouldered to limit its outward movement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of November, 1906.
HORACE Y. OTTO.
