To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, THEorrnLUs VAN KAN- NEL, a citizen of the United. States, residing at 524 East One Hundred and Thirty-fourth street, New York, county of New York, and l State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotatable Partition-Shelves, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of l the same.

This invention relates to a'pantry-shelf rotatable in a partition between two rooms; and the object ofthe present invention is to l render such a rotating pantry-shelf more impervious to the passage of hot air, fumes, gases, or odors, which object is attained by a v special construction of thedrum which contains the shelf and a special construction of the casing surrounding the drum and which is supplied with packings set ninety degrees apart in contact with the periphery and heads of the drum. The doorways in the drum are made less than ninety degrees in their opening, and the packings upon the casing are set ninety degrees apart, so as to the doorways in their rotation from one side of the partition to the other, and the packings which fit the heads of the drum are extended across between the ends of the vertical packings, so as to frame the drum completely within a yielding-packing, which absolutely prevents the passage of fumes.

To increase the utility of the device, a drum provided with a segmental shelf inter mediate to the heads is formed with doorways in opposite sides of the drum above and below such intermediate shelf which permits articles to be placed upon or removed from the bottom shelf through a doorway on one side of the partition, while articles are placed upon or removed from the intermediate shelf through the doorway at the opposite side of the partition. I

The drum should be provided with means I to set it automatically (when turned) in a central position with the doorway in the opening of the casing, and the connections for turning the drum are arranged at both sides of the partition, so as to operate the same from either side.

In Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, A designates the partition separating two rooms A A with which the pantry-window communicates. B designates a table attached to the partition upon one side, and O a journal in the partition near the table for the'bottom head D of the drum. Such head is shown made ofitwo plates connected by an intermediate ring D and strips D which form a more durable structure than a single plank for the lower head of the drum. The upper head E is circular like the lower head and rigidly connected therewith by quadrantal sides F, Fig. 6. An intermediate shelf G is attached to the sides F between the two heads, and a quadrantai panel H is fitted. between the intermediate shelf and the upper head at one edge'of the shelf and asimilar panel between the shelf and the lower head at the opposite edge of the shelf, leaving the space between the sides F open at opposite edges of the shelf above and below the same. The construction of the drum with quadrantal sides F and quadrantal panels fitted between the same, at oppositesides of'the drum above and below the intermediate shelf, furnishes a cheap and effective construction for providing the drum with doorways upon opposite sides. Each of the panels H is provided with a window I to permit aperson at either side of'the structure to see the movements of a person upon the other side. A journal J is projected from the top of the drum through a bearing upon a'frame K within the top L of the casing, which incloses the opening throughthepartition and which is projected from both sides of the partition into the rooms A and A The casing has sides M, Figs. 5 and 6, carrying packings N ninety degrees apart in contact with the sides F of the drum. The 5 sides F embrace an arc of a little more than ninety degrees, so that one or other of the packings is always in contact with each of the sides and prevents any passage of smoke or fumes past such sides. Flexible packing- Io flaps for the top head of the drum are shown in Fig. 1 arranged in straight lines between the ends of the packings N and in Fig. 5 arranged radially. The packings shown in Fig. '1 extend, like the packings 0, between I 5 the ends of the vertical packings N, and thus wholly inclose or frame in the drum between yielding surfaces which prevent smoke or fumes from entering the casing. Such a drum may be turned by ulling the structure where it protrudes outside of the casing and also by gearing connected with a pulley upon the journal of the drum.

In Fig. 3 the drum is shown with a projecting lug P, and blocks Q are attached to the sides M of the casing to arrest the drum when given a half-rotation.

A grooved pulley R is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 attached to the journal J, with a cord S wrapped around the same and its ends ex- 0 tended over guide-wheels T and attached to a pulley U, mounted upon a crank-shaft V, extended through the partition A. The partition is shown in Figs. 3 to 6, like most permanent partitions in large. buildings, made 3 5 with central joists and sheathing upon both sides. This leaves a hollow space in which the drum U can be located and the guide-pulleys T pivoted at the level of the pulley R. The cord S can then be extended from the casing within the partition, as shown in Fig. 3, and the connections for operating the drum be almost entirely concealed. The shaft has hand-cranks W upon opposite sides of the partition, and the ends of the cord are wrapped in separate spiral grooves on the pulley. The cranks W stand normally in the lowest position. The pulley U is made of such size that a rotation of the crank-shaft gives the drum a half-rotation. Where stops, like P Q in Fig. 3 are used, the hand-crank and drum would be turned alternately in opposite directions; but a cam may be provided to set the drum automatically in either of its two opposite positions and the drum turned always in the same direction. The side packings for the drum could be 7 attached to the sides F if the casing were made concentric therewith; but such a casing would be unnecessarily expensive, and the introduction of the drum to the casin is greatly facilitated by making the sides M of the casing parallel, as shown in Fig. 6, with guide-bars M projected from the edges toward the drum to carry the packings N.

Having thus set forth the nature of the in- 1 1o vention, what is claimed herein is- 1. 3. A rotatable delivery-shelf, comprising a drum having two heads D and E and an intermediate shelf G connected by opposite quadrantal sides F with intermediate openings of less than ninety degrees, quadrantal panels H closing the openings upon opposite sides of the drum above and below the intermediate shelf, a casing M embracing opposite uadrants of the drum, journals upon the rum fitted to the casing, and vertical. packings attached to the casing at least ninety degrees apart to bear uponthe sides of the drum.

4. A rotatable delivery-shelf comprising a drum having a quadrantal doorway, a casing inclosing opposite quadrants of the drum with opposite openings corresponding to such doorway, and supportingournals upon the drum, a cam rotatable with the drum and provided with two opposite recesses, and a yielding member upon the casing having a projection to fit the said recesses and adjusted to permit, the rotation of the drum in either direction, and to automatically set the drum, when released from the rotary force, with its doorways opposite to the openings in the casing.

5. Arotatable delivery-shelf comprising a drum having a quadrantal doorway, a casing inclosing opposite quadrants of the drum, with opposite openings corresponding to such doorway, and supporting-journals upon the drum, a cam a rotatable with the drum and having two projections with intermediate recesses a, the opposed leaf-springs c with rollers b fitted to the said recesses and supported upon the casing by studs, the rolls permitting the drum to rotate in either direction and ad-' justed'to automatically set the drum when released from the rotary force, with its doorways opposite the openings of the casing.

6. The combination, with a hollow partition having a passage-way extended therethrough, of a drum journaled in the passageway and having a quadrantal doorway, the casing M applied to the edges of the passageway and embracing opposite quadrants of the drums periphery, the pulley R attached to one of the journals of the drum, the crankshaft V extended through the partition with hand-cranks W at opposite sides of the partition and pulley U mounted thereon inside the partition, and a cord S running over the pulley P and extending from the opposite sides thereof out from the casing and within the partition, and its ends wound about the pulley -U in opposite directions, whereby the connections for rotating the drum are concealed in the partition and casin 7. The combination, with the ollow partition A having a passage-way extended therethrough, of the drum E mounted in the passage-way and having a ,quadrantal doorway, the casing M applied to the edges of the passage-way and embracing opposite quadrants of the drums periphery, the journals C and J upon the drum fitted to the casing, the pulley R attached to the journal J, the crank-shaft V extended through the partition with handcranks W at opposite sides of the partition and pulley 'U mounted thereon inside the partition, said pulley bein one-half the size of the pulley R, guide-pul eys T within the partition at the level of the pulley R and above the pulley V, and a cord S running over the pulley E and extended from the opposite sides thereof out from the casing and within the partition over the guide-pulleys T and its ends wound around the pulley U in opposite directions, whereby a complete revolution of either crank turns the drum one-half a rotation in its casing. i
