Description

i rTHOMAS W. HARBER, YOF GOLDEN CITY, MISSOURI.
1 specieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed October 19, 1905. Serial No. 283,413.
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. HARBER, a .citizen of the United States, residing at GoldenjmyCity', in the county of Barton and State-of.v Missouri, have invented a new and usefu Wrenchgand I do hereby declare the following ,to be a full, clear, and exactA description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled Iin the art tol which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches; and the object of the same is to provide a device of this character having novel means for locking the movable jaw to'iit any size 0f nut or pipe. i
More particularly the invention provides a wrench having a fixed jaw, the shank portion thereof and the handle all made in one piece, the handle being made in such a shape as to allow the movable jaw to slide over the same for engagement with the shank portion thereof, after which the tightening and adjustable nut is passed over l the handle, after which it engages the shank portion and is snapped in engagement with snapping-clamps carried by the movable jaw.
The invention also provides novel means for the adjustment of said tightening-nut.
This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out by the appended claim.
To obtain a full and correct understanding' of the details of construction and combination of features, elements, and advantages, reference is to be had Vto the hereinafter-setforth description inconnection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the fixed jaw and shank portion thereof, and Fig. 4 is a detail of the movable jaw and tightening-nut.
Making renewed reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate the corresponding parts in the several illustrations by figures, 1 designates the xed jaw of the improved wrench having a shank portion 2, which is provided with a suitable handle 3, which is of such shape as to allow the movable jaw 4 to be placed or moved over the same. The shank portion carried by the fixed jaw is provided with a plurality of screw-threads 5, which are formed V-shaped u on the upperjgdand lower surfaces of the s ank portion thereof. Adapted to be slidably carried by the shank portion is vthe movable jaw 4 of the form shown in the accompanying drawings. Said movable jaw is provided with a pair of snapping-clamps 6, one above and one below upon said movable jaw. These snapping-clamps are pivoted, as at 7, and have a spring 8 to engage the under faces thereof for the purpose of restoring the snapping-clamps to their normal position. The outer ends of the snapping-clamps have a beveled portion 9, adapted to engage a beveled portion 10 upon the circumferential edge of an adjustable tightening-nut 11, which when 'said nut is forced against the movable jaw will cause said snapping-clamps to spread and allow the same to engage a circumferential recess 12 adjacent to the beveled portion upon the adjustable tighteningnut, thus allowing the Wrench to be assembled y'very easily, and when thus manufactured will obviate the necessity of having the handle portion .made separate from the shank portion, after which the same is inserted thereover and riveted together.l
The adjustable tightening-nut is provided with interrupted screw-threads 13, adapted for engagement with the threads upon the shank portion ofthe wrench. Thus it will be readily understood that when the interrupted threads of the adjustable tighteningnut come in contact with a portion ofthe threads upon theshank portion-that is, the
portion running at an angle to the portion v that .the interrupted threads are engagingsaid nut will be limited in its rotation thereof.
From the foregoing it will be plainly observed that a very eflicient device is provided whereby the fixed jaw having the shank portion and the handle all in one piece, the movable jaw, and the adjustable tightening-nut may all be assembled in a very short length of time, and when manu-l factured as shown in the accompanying drawings the saine may be sold to the trade comparatively cheap.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is g A wrench comprising a fixed jaw, a shank portion thereof and a handle therefor, a movroov able jawI mounted upon said shank, an adjustable nut carried by the shank, having interrupted threads upon the inner circu'nference thereof, snapping-clamps pivotally oarl red by the movable jaw, the outer portion thereof being beveled to eoperate With the beveled portion upon the adjustable nut, grooves formed by the snapping-clamps, and a portion of the movable jaw adapted to be engaged by the beveled flanged portion of the 1o nut7 as set forth.
In testipnony whereof I have hereto a'llxed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
