Description

BLACK & GAFFNEY.
Device for Saw Carriages.
No. 84,046. Patented No v. 17,-1868.
1 4. Invent? i that i finder Qe LEVI BLACK AND MILTON GA-FFNEY, OFLOGAN, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 84,046, dated November 17, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICE FOR SAW-CARRIAGES.
The schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEVI BLACK and MILTON GAFFNEY; of Logan, in the county of Hocking, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Combined Gauge and Clamping-Device for Saw-Oarriages, for holding turned work, for squaring-and sizing the same; and we'do hereb declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe-construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan fiew.
Figure 2-is a side elevation.
Figure 3, a perspective view of block, with notch for holdingwork cornerwise, for taking off the corners.
Figure 4, View of vertical singleplatc stop or holder detached.
' Like letters in different figures of the drawings indi cate like parts.
, Nat-awe.
Our invention consists of adjustable holders, with clamp and gauge, for squaring and sizing the unturned part of bed-posts, table-legs, and other turned Work, the holders at one end being two sliding plates, provided with flanges flaring in opposite directions. At
the other end of the saw-carriage, the holder is made v-shape, and attached to a sliding stop, with handle, which serves as a clamp.
A proper scale for gauging the size of the Work is marked on the sliding plates and on the saw-carriage.
A block with a v-shape notch is used for holding the work in proper position for taking off the corners, so as to form an octagon.
Construction.
A is the saw-carriage, on one end of which is attached the stationary block B. Slotted plates, a and b, provided with flanges at one end, are attached to block G is a block with a v-shape notch, to be used for holding the work corncrwise when the corners are to be taken off.
H is a single vertical plate-stop or holder, to be at tached to stop or clamp E, instead of holder F, when the work may require it.
The saw is hung so that the face thereof is at right angles with the face of the saw-carriage.
Operation.
The plates and holders being so adjusted as to'briug the work in the required position to the saw, the carriage is moved forward. (See fig. 1.) The side of the work thus straightened by the saw, is then turned down upon the carriage, and the saw, working at right angles with the face of the carriage, squares the second side with the first, and the other two sides are squared in like manner, and the work made the required size by means of the gauge on plate a and on carriage A.
If the work has one true side, that should be placed on the carriage and the others squared to it, as above described.
To take off the corners and form an octagon, the notched block G is used. Stop or holder H is for use instead of holder F, when the work may require it;
and any other centre or holder required may be attached to the sliding top or clamp E, in same manner.
We are aware of the patent, No. 76,740, to O. P. .ifiurrna-n, dated April 1868, for improvement in planing-machines, and we hereby disclaim the use of the devices of that invention.
Claim.
Having thus fully described our illYCIltiOIl,
What we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Adjustable plates (1' and I), holders 1 and H, sliding stop or clamp E, and plate D, herein described, constructed, combined, and arranged to operate in the manner andi'or the purpose set forth.
