FRAME OR REINFORCEMENT F.0RCONCRETERAiLRoA -sLEEPERs.
Patented Dec. 25,1906.
Application filed September 8,1905. Sena-1N0. 277,582.
To all whom it may concern.- a
Be it known that I, PIERRE CHAUDY, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, 3 Rue du Havre, in the Department of Seine, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames or Reinforcements for Concrete Railroad-Sleepers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a frame to be used in connection with cement concrete for producing railroad-sleepers. 9
This frame comprises rods of metal, such as iron or steel, which are made to securely bind the cement concrete, so as to increase its resistance to compression. By means of small posts suitably applied said structure is made to resist-the strains of extension.
This frame consists of a series of posts and bent and undulated bars by which the posts are held in place and the cement bound so as to resist the compression or strain of use.
The frame is covered with a protecting layer of concrete of identical composition as the core. By corrugating the lower face of the sleeper lateral cree ing is prevented.
The rails are fastened to the sleepers in any This invention is set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-e Figure 1 is plan view of a sleeper embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1.
In the drawings are shown iron or steel bars 12. Each such bar extends continuously or in one piece about thedevice -to. form a frame-like and strong binding. Posts or transverse bars p are fixed to the ,bars in vertical position by suitable means-as, for example, by wire. These posts are of like material or metal as the bars.
Bars 1) suitably interwoven engage and hold posts p in the interior of the structure. This arrangement serves to hoop or bind the concrete and increase its power of resistance. These bars I)? extend longitudinally.
Treenails T are applied at suitable points according to the gage of the track and the t e of rails. a
he grooves n, indentedin the concreteat the lower face of the sleeper, can be produced or made by the use of a compressing-roller of sufficient weight and provided with corresponding projections and which can be rolled on'the concrete before the same is set. The bars b form hoops which in connection with the posts p p .ovide a cage-like inclosing structure, which prevents the concrete from bursting apart or fracturing under the compression or weight of a train or locomotive;
The sleeper can be applied whatever he the ga e of the tracks.
at I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A railroad-sleeper comprising a concrete core and frame-bars each extended continuously or in one piece about the core to form a horizontal hoop to bind or inclose the said core, transverse bars engaged by the framebars or. hoops to form an inclosure for the same, straight bars in the core, and bars interwoven with said straight bars.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
PIERRE CHAUDY.
