WILLIAM J. 'VVAGNER, OF EAST BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROLLEY-POLE HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application-filed October 28,1905. Serial No. 284,810.
To all whom/ it mar/y concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Bradford, in the county of McKean, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley- Pole Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
- This invention relates to trolley pole heads.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient device of the character stated. 9
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of opposing clamping members adapted to yield-ably engage each other to embrace the trolley-wire in such manner that the usual brackets and circuit-breakers may be readily passed.
TVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one pair of semicylindricah shaped feed-wire-embracing members. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the pair of arms with which the members of each pair of semicy lindrical-shaped members are connected.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 2 indicates a trolley-pole, which is enlarged at its outer end and bifurcated to form spaced ears 3 for the reception therebetween of a trolley-wheel 4, whose axle 5 is reduced at its ends for engagement in the slots 6 of the springplates 7 and 8, which hold the axle adjust-ably in their slots by means of the pairs of nuts 9 and 10 cooperating therewith and the reduced ends of the axle. The lower end of each spring-plate 7 and 8 is bent outwardly, as shown at 11, for engagement with the correspondingly-perforated lugs 13 of the brackets 14 and 15. The arms 16 and 17 of the brackets 14 and 15 each have connected therewith a semicylindrical-shaped trolleywire- engaging member 18 and 19. These members 18 and 19 adapted to form a cylindrical-shaped member when secured together provided with flaring ends 20, which are cut away at 21 to form a V-shaped notch 22 at each end of each complete cylindricalshaped member, so that the semicylindrical members 18 and 19 of the complete cylindrical member may readily separate from each other when contact thereof is made with a bracket, circuit-breaker, or the like.
The trolley-wire is indicated by the reference character 23, and it will be seen that a pair of clamping members 18 and 19 is arranged in front and in the rear of the trolleywheel 4. Now in order to hold these clamping members 18 and 19 in yieldable engagement with each other the arms 16 and 17 of each bracket are each provided at its upper end with the semicylindrical fingers 26 and 27, adapted to embrace the semicylindricalshaped trolley-wire-engaging members 18 and 19 and to be secured fixedly thereto. It will thus be understood that the arms 16 and 17 of each bracket are in spaced relation, and in order to connect them together so that they may be operated to move the semicylindrical- shaped members 18 and 19 away from each other I provide each arm of each bracket with a lug 28 and 29, respectively. The lug 29 is provided with a curved slot 30, while the lug 28 is provided with a perfora tion. The lugs 28 and 29 are designed to overlap each other and are held in such over lapped relation by means of a suitable bolt 32 passed through the said perforation and the slot 30 of the respective lugs. Obviously by reason of the peculiar connection of the overlapped lugs they cannot move one in advance of the other, but are permitted a slight lateral play with respect to each other for downward pull upon the operating-rope 36 the purpose of moving the semicylindricalwill separate the semicylindrical members 18 and 19 when desired.
What is claimed is 1. A trolley-pole head comprising a pole having a Wheel mounted at its upper end, brackets arranged upon opposite sides of the trolley-pole, a connection between the ends of the aXis of the trolley-Wheel and said brackets, a semicylindrical member secured at each end of said brackets to form cooperating pairs of members to embrace the trolley- Wire, and means connecting the brackets whereby the pairs of wire-embracing members may be separated with relation one member with its companion member.
2. A trolley-pole head comprisin a pole having its upper end enlarged and bi mated to form spaced ears, a trolley-wheel mounted between said ears, a pair of brackets arranged upon opposite sides of the trolley-pole, each bracket having a projection intermediate its ends, a spring-plate connected to each projection of each bracket and provided with a slot for the adjustable sup ort in the latter of the axle of the trolley-w eel, pairs of trolley-Wire-engaging members connected to the said brackets and arranged for engagement with the trolley-Wire in front and in the rear of the trolley-wheel, and means connected to the brackets whereby the latter may be moved to operate the Wire-embracing members to permit disengagement of the latter with the trolley-Wire. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WM. J. WAGNER.
