Be it known that I, RICHARD H. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feeding Devices for Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of metalrolling, and more particularly to the feeding means for the material to be rolled or reduced.
To this end the invention contemplates a simple and practical construction of feeding device for rolling-mills.
My invention primarily has in View a construction of feeding device for rolling-mills possessing special utility as a feeder or guide for tin-plate and other kinds of light thin sheet metal to obviate the usual difficulties experienced in feeding light-weight metal to reducing rolls. Ordinarily in the feeding of this class of material great difliculty has been experienced in the tendency of such material to curl, kink, or buckle, and the present invention provides a construction which secures a proper feed of the plates into the bite of the mill-rolls, while at the same time preventing the plate from kinking, buckling, or curling.
\Vith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear to those familiar with the art, the invention consists in the novel con struction, combination, and arrangement of partshereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in the mounting of the several rollers of the feeding device are susceptible to some structural modification without departing from the scope of the invention; but a preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a rolling-mill, illustrating an applied position of the improved feeding device at the feeding-in side of the mill-rolls. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the rolling-mill with the improved feeding device applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the feeding device, showing the rolling-mill in section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the feeding device, the view also showing its relation to the mill-rolls. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one side portion or frame-bar of the feeding device or attachment.

The feeding device contemplated by the present invention is designed. to be associated with any of the ordinary types of rolling-mills embodying in their general organization the superposed mill-rolls or reducing-rolls 1 and 2, supported in their relation one above the other between the opposite roll-housings 3. The feeding device as an entirety is supported between the opposite roll-housings wholly at the feeding-in side of the rolls 1 and 2 and in a plane to pass the plate directly into the bite of said rolls.
The active elements of the feeding device are a pair of horizontal upper and lower feed-rollers f and 5, respectively, and a single friction driving-roller 6, arranged for frictional contact with the surface of, one of the mill-rolls and also with the surface of one of the feed-rollers to provide means for transmitting the necessary feeding motion to the rollers 4 and 5, as will be more particularly pointed out. The feed-rollers 4 and 5 are arranged in horizontal positions and in the same vertical plane one above the other. Also the said rollers are located within the angle between the mill-rolls at the feeding-in side thereof, so that the bite of the feedingrollers is in substantially the horizontal plane of the bite of the mill-rolls and as close to such bite as practicable, so that a comparatively short distance lies between the feeding-rollers and the point where the plate is caught by the mill-rolls, thereby materially contributing to the feeding of the thin plate to the millrolls without buckling or curling. In the preferable construction of the feeding device the single friction driving-roller is arranged for contact with the lower mill-roll 2, and hence is located below and in contact with the lower of said feeding-rollers, (designated by the reference-numeral 5.)
In order to properly position and support the several rollers of the feeding device in the locations just referred to, the invention provides improved supporting and adjusting means for the same. Referring thereto it will be observed that the several rollers of the feeding device are associated with what may be termed a carrying-frame, consisttact of the driving-roll 6 with the mill-roll 2.

The frame-bars are duplicates in construction, and each of the same essentially con sists of an approximately straight bar or frame member provided at its outer end with a hand-grip 8 and at its inner end with an upright open bearing-cup 9, receiving one of the j ournal-spindles 10 of the lower feedroller 5. Also each of the opposite support ing frame-bars 7 is provided at its inner end portion with an integral pendent inner hanger-arm 11, arranged obliquely and provided at its lower extremity with an attaching-ear 12, designed to receive a fasteningbolt 13, secured in the adjacent roll-housing 3 to provide a supporting connection for the inner end of the frame-bar. The said inner pendent hanger-arm 11 of each frame-bar 7 is provided therein with a bearing-opening 14, arranged intermediate the bearing-cup 9 and the lower attaching-ear 12 and designed to accommodate therein a bearing-box 15, provided with an adjustable cap 16, against which operates the set-screw 17, which serves to maintain the proper frictional con- The bearing-boxes 15 of the opposite frame members or .bars 7 receive therein the j ournal spindles or ends 18 of the said friction driving-roller 6.

Each of the opposite frame-bars 7 is pro vided contiguous to its inner end with an upstanding bearing-lug 22, on which is pivotally mounted, as at 23, a holding-lever 24;.
The holding-lever 1s pivotally supported intermediate its ends, and at the inner end thereof is provided with an inverted open bearing-cup 25 for a journal-spindle 26 of the upper feed-roller 4. -The inner end portion of each holding-lever 24 has a threaded opening 27, receiving a regulating-screw 28, bear- 1 I ing on the frame-bar and serving to adjust the feed-roller 4 to the thickness of the A pressure-spring 29, interposed between the holding-lever 24-and the frame-bar 7, serves to yieldingly hold the upper feed-roller in contact with the lower feed-roller.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described feeding device will be readily apparent without further description.
What I claim is 1 Afeeding device for rolling-mills comprising oppositely-arranged supporting framebars, a lower feed-roller mounted on the framebars, ad'ustable holders supported on the frame-bars, an upper feed-roller held by said holders and arranged in superposed relation to the lower feedroller, and driving means for said feed-rollers.
2. A feeding device for rolling-mills, com.- prising a pair of upper and lower feed-rollers, a friction driving-roller arranged for contact with one of the feed-rollers, oppositely-arranged supporting frame-bars carrying the lower feed-roller and the driving-roller, and adjustable holders supported on-the framebars and holding the upper feedroller.
3. A feeding device for rolling-mills comprising a pair of suitably-driven feed-rollers arranged in superposed relation, and a supporting-frame for said rollers consisting of oppositely-located frame-bars having a pivotal hanger-support at their inner ends and an adjustable hanger-support at or contiguous to their outer ends.
4. A feeding device for rolling-mills comprising a pair of superposed feederollers, a friction driving-roller arranged for. contact with one of the feed-rollers, oppositely-located supporting framebars provided. at their inner ends with bearing-cups for the journals of the lower, feed-roller, and with pendent hanger-arms having attaching-ears and adjustable bearing-boxes for the journals of the friction drivingroller, said frame bars also having outer shiftable holdingarms, carrier-levers pivotally supported intermediate their ends upon and above the frame-bars and provided at their inner ends with bearings for the journals of the upper feed-roller, and regulating devices mounted in the outer ends of the carrier-levers and engaging the frame-bars.
