D. W. UNDBRDOWN. TOILET PAPER PACKAGE.
APPLICATION FILED DBO.18. 1905.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed December 18, 1906- Snrial No. 292,163.
To (I/ZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL WV. UNDER- DOWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Clemens, county of Macomb, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Im rovement in Toilet-Paper Packages; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in toilet-paper packages; and its object is to provide means for determining when the paper in the package is nearly exhausted.
It is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure represents a perspective view of a roll of toilet-paper with portions of the paper cut away, exposing the core.
In the drawing, A represents the body portion of a roll of toilet-paper of the usual tissue-paper type, and B represents the core. The preferred form of my lnvention consists of the use of the core either of wood, fiber, or paper, the core having wrapped around it a black label I), uponwhich is Written or printed white letters I). By making the core black and then winding the thin tissue-paper around it a certain number of turns of the tissue-paper can be wrapped on the core without concealing the core, the black surface showing through the tissue aper. By breaking up the black surface, as y printing thereon the white letters, the core shows more clearly through the paper. Instead of using the black label the core can be colored black or, if preferred, any other color may be used that will show through the tissue- P P z Various expedlents can be used for making the core appear through the pa er, such as perforating the first turns of t e paper or using paper at this point that is nearer transparent, or the paper can be printed or otherwise marked at the end near the core, the object being to provide means for making it noticeable when the paper is nearly exhausted.
I do not limit my invention to the use of transparent or semitransparent paper, as the colored core is of advantage in determining at a glance when the paper is actually exhausted, while in the form of package usu ally sold the core is wrapped with the same paper used in the package and the first turn of the paper is glued or pasted to the core, so that the core when the paper is exhausted has the same appearance as before exhausted.
The object of my invention is to notify the user that the paper is nearly exhausted, where possible, and to clearly notify the user that the paper is fully exhausted when there is no more for use.
What I claim is 1. In a toilet-paper package, a core in combination with a roll of semitransparent paper, said core being of a contrasting color to that of the paper, substantially as described. 2. In a toilet-paper package, a core having contrasting colors upon it in combination with a roll of semitransparent paper, substantially as described.
3. In a toilet-paper package, a core having certain arbitrary characters in contrasting colors upon it in combination with a roll of semitransparent paper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL WV. UNDERDOWN.
