j f UNITED sTATEs PATENT OEEIOE. I i SWAN swANsoN, or PUEBLO, COLORADO.
l i DUMPING-CAR.
Nasa-39,335.
Specicaton of Lettersy Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
To all whom t may concerng' y Be it known that I, SWAN F. SwANsoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo andState of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Dumping-Cars; and I do decljare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.` A
,My invention relates to improvements in dumping-cars, wagons, and the like g and it consists in thel construction, combination,v
and arrangement of scribed and claimed.
The object of the invention is to improve parts hereinafter dej and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render the` same more durable and eiiicient and less expensive. v
The above and other objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated'in the accompanying drawings, in whichvFigure l is a 4bottom plan view of the body of a dumping-car constructed in accordance with' my invention. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same, taken on the plane indicated by the vline 3 3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on th plane indicated -by the line 4 4in Fig. 1. i I
i The present embodiment of my invention is in the form of a rectangular car or wagon body 1,v constructed of metal and having straight orvertical sides 2 and ends 3; but it will be understood that the improvements may be appliedto a car, wagon, lor the like of anyvform and construction which may have either straight or inclined ends and sides and any number of swinging bottom-sections.v
Four`bottom-sections 4 are shown inthe drawings, and these are arranged in pairs and` hinged at 5 to the inner faces of the sides 2 a short distance above the lower edges of the latter, 'so that they will swing downwardly and outwardly from the center of the car. The lower portions ofthe sides and ends 2 3 of the body are strengthened by angle-metal bars 6 and flat bars or plates 7, and upon the inner or Jfree longitudinal edge of two of the bottom-sections 4 are provided projecting ledges or tongues 8 to effect a tight joint between the meeting ends of the opposingbottom-sections, asshown in Fig. Between the side edgesof the adjacent bottom-sections and at the ends of the body are transverse sills 9 in the form of I-beams, which have secured upon their tops plates 10, the. projecting edges of the latter being adapted to limit the upward swinging movement of the bottom-sections 4. l
The bottom-sections 4 are swung open and closed by rotating a lever, crank-handle, or
Athe like 11 upon one end of a longitudinal shaft 1,2, journaled in suitable bearings upon the outer face of one of the sides 2 of the carbody. A pawl-and-ratchet locking device 13 is provided at said end of the shaft to hold the latter' against rotation, and hence the bottom-sections 4 in their closed position. Upon the shaft 12 are secured pinions 14, which project through slots in the side 2 and mesh with gears 15, secured on short shafts 16, extending through the I-beams 9 and the upwardlyextending arms or ends of U-shaped bearingbrackets 17, secured upon the bottom flanges of said I-beams, as shown in Fig. 4. Upon said short shafts 16 on opposite sides of the I- beams are'secured grooved pulleys or drumsl 18, to which are attached and upon which are wound chains or other flexible connections 1 9. The opposite ends of these chains 19 are divided to provide two branches 20 21, which pass over guide-pulleys 23 upon the I-beams and have theirends attached to the eyes of bolts 23. The latter are mounted in the bent lower ends 24 of arms or brackets 25, secured lupon the bottom faces of the bottom-sections 4, as clearly shown in the drawings. It will be seenA that when the shaft 16 is rotated in one direction the chains will be Aunwound from the drums 18 and the bottom-sections of the car or wagon will swing to their lowered or opened position and that when it is rotated in the reverse direction said chains will be wound upon the drums 18 and the bottomsections will be'swung up to their elevated or closed position. The pawl-and-ratchet device retains them in the latter position. Any suitable means may be provided for adjusting the length of the branches of the chains.
From the foregoing description, taken lin connection with theaccompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the .minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the prinrool I no
`flexible connections between said arms and said windingf drums, substantially as described.
2.' A dumping-car or the like comprising walls, bottom-sections hinged to swing, from said walls, beams connecting said walls, a long shaft upon one of said Walls, short shafts upon said beams, gearing between said long and short shafts, guides upon said beams, dep ending bracket-arms upon said bottom-sections, winding-drums upon said short shafts, flexible connections between said arms and said winding-drums, a lever upon said long shaft, and a paWl-and-ratchet locking device between said long shaft and one of the walls of the car, substantially as described.
.ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
