To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, Jenn G-sonen BELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Beacon Side, Ivegill, near Southwaite, in the county of Cumberland, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tires for Vehicles,of which the following is a specification. This invention has referenceto elastic tires for vehiclespand is more particularly applicable to the wheels of cycles and motor-vehicles.
According to my invention I provide three bands of a springy or yielding nature, and I5- the outer and middle bands are preferably compound, as hereinafter described, T'wo of the bands are extensile and contractilethat is to say, their ends overlap-and are fre to slide over each other. Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of my improved tire; and Fig. 2, a plan. thereof with the outer cover removed. Fig.
3 is an enlarged view of aportion of Fig. 1, as and Figs. 4 and 5 plan views of the middle,
and inner bands, respectively. .Fig. 6 is an enlarged cross-section of a portion of the tire.
In the drawings, A is the outer band,which consists of four strips B 0 1) F of spring-steel,
3 and these are placed side by side circumferentially around the wheel, and G is a strip of spring-steel to cover the opening between the two middle strips of steel. These four strips ofsteel are held together sidewise and are also-kept a very slight distance. apart from each other by means of lashings H, of string,
canvas, tapes, or the like, the object of keeping them apart being to prevent squeaking through their edges grinding against each other. I provide also in some cases a thin hand. of cork or other suitable material (not shown) to prevent this outer band coming into actual ccntact withand thereby cutting the outer cover I, which outer cover is similar to those ordinarily used with pneumatic tires.
' The middle band J composed in much the same Way as the outer band A, except that each strip J is made in four pieces with E overlapping ends K, which are wrapped round by flattened springs L, to which they are anchored by lugs E, so that when this middle band-J expanded these springsare compressed more or less, ac ording to the pressure brought to bear upon them.

corresponding with those of the band J, and has sliding locks O. The object of this band M is to prevent the springs V, herinafte'r described, from expanding too much.
The outer band A and the middle bandJ are connected together by means of spiral springs P, placed radially. There may be any suitable number of these, and one half of them are fixed at one side and the other half are fixed at the opposite side, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and they are so arranged that those on one side break joint with those on the other side, as I have found from experiency.
The inner band Q consists of one stri preferably thicker than the other two ban s A and J, and it has only one overlapping portion R, which isprovided with sliding locks S; but surrounding this band are two narrow strips 'of spring-steel T, having overlap ping portions U, .corres onding with those of the middle band J. hese two strips U and band J are connected by springs V but these are stronger than s rings P, so that they act to take up and istribute any excessive shock and also prove useful in the case of bad adjustment of the tire or in the case of a heavy rider or load. I prefer to rovide distance pieces'W, referably of cor or other suitable materia between the three bands, and these serve to I prevent the radial springs being s uashed in case of emergency. In the rim of the wheel itself I provide outwardly-extending screws X, and when these are screwed outward they press upon the inner band and expand it, thus utting all the arts into tension more or ess, as require it being. understood that the outer cover I has been placed in position over the bands While they were in their contracted state.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
