UNITED STATES PATENT o E1oE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed March 21, 1905. Serial No. 251,295.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIc FoUoHE, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 38 Rue des Eoluses Saint-Martin, Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Metal Radiators, of which the following is a specification.
The improvements forming the subjectmatter of this invention relate to the manner in which the two sheets of metal forming the walls of a radiator are connected together.
The accompanying drawing represents in cross-section a radiator constructed according to the invention.
A and B are, respectively, the metal sheets forming the walls of the radiator. These two metal sheets must be fitted together in such a manner that the radiator of which they form the walls is able to resist external and internal pressure. To obtain this result, the two metal sheets A and B have stamped in them a number of cup-shaped recesses C forming projecting bosses in the inside of the radiator, the arrangement being such that the bosses on one of the sheets are coincident and come into contact with those of the other sheet when the radiator is assembled, so that the necessary resistance to external pressure is insured.
To provide the requisite resistance to internal pressure I employ rivets D, which pass through holes made in the bottoms of the recesses or depressions C. These rivets are not directly riveted to the bottom of the recesses, but metallic washers E and F are interposed, the washers E being rigid and the washers F compressible. The rivets D are applied upon the rigid washers E.
It is obvious that the use of the compressible washers serves the useful purpose of pcrmitting a slight movement of the radiator sides with respect to the rigid washers, thus tending to distribute the strain upon the metal thereof throughout the portions lying between the washers.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be per formed, I declare that What I claim is In a device of the kind described, means for securing the metal plates forming the radiator, comprising rivets and rigid and com ressible washers interposed between the hea s of the said rivets and said plate, the compressible washers bearing directlyagainst the plate and the rivet-heads against the rigid washers, substantially as described.
FREDERIO FOUOHE.
