BLIND OR SHUTTER FASTENER.

T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I; VASHBURN RACE, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construc-v tion of Shutter-Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and in which-- Figure l represents a view of a portion of a window frame and the shutter thereof with my fastening applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a section of the shutter and fastening; and Figs. 3, t, 5, 6, 7, and 8, are separate detached views of the various parts of which the fastening is composed.

My fastening is composed of a free and of a fast hook, which are secured to the shutter by means of two plates in such manner that the former can engage with a fiXed hasp attached to the wall of the house, and thus hold the shutter open, while the lat-ter can engage with a movable hasp secured to the sill of the window frame to hold the shutter closed; the two hooks acting in such manner that the free one can be detached from its hasp by the application of the hand to the side of the shutter opposite to that from which the hook projects, while the fast hook can only be disengaged by raising the hasp with which it engages; and the several pieces of which the fastening is composed being of such form that they can readily be constructed of cast metal and can be put together without ,the employment of pins or rivets as a portion of the fast hook forms a pivot for the movable hook and the former is secured in place by the act of screwing the fastening to the shutter.

In the accompanying drawings A is the free hook, it is cast with a ring b at its butt, and with a notch o.

D is the fast hook which is of an elbow form, the hook e corresponding with the hand; that part f of this hook which corresponds with the arm has a snug g cast fast to it.

H is the inner plate of the fastening; it has a protuberance j cast fast to it which on its inner side is hollow to form a socket in which the arm of the fast hook is inserted; it is also cast with an aperture i to receive the snug g of the fast hook and with a slot 7c through which the shank of the movable 8,887, dated September 23, 1851.

merely a slot for the passage of the free hook. Both plates have screw holes n, n, formed in them, either by casting or otherwise, to admit the screws by means of which they are secured to the shutter.

The outer hasp, 'or that with which the free hook engages to hold the shutter open, consists merely of a strip of sheet metal bent as shown at M, and perforated to admit a screw. rfhe inner hasp P has the form of a ring fitted with a shank 7; the faces of the latter are inclined to those of the ring, and the point of junction of the ring and shank is made narrower to form a neck s.

When this fastening is to be applied to ashutter, suitable holes are first made for the passage of the hook A and for the wood screws. The free hookA is then inserted, point foremost through the slot of the inner plat-e until its notch c enters the plate. The fast hook is now applied to the inner side of the same plate, its snug g entering the hole z' made to receive it, and the upper eX- tremity of its arm f entering the notch c of the free hook, as shown in sect-ion at Fig. 2. The plate with the two hooks thus applied to it is now fitted to the shutter as shown at Fig. l, and the outer plate L is passed over the point of the free hook and secured to the outer side of the shutter. The fixed hasp M, is secured to the wall of the house in such a position that the free hook can engage with it. The inner hasp, P, is secured to the sill of the window, in such a position that the fast hook can engage with it, by means of a wire staple o which is passed over its neck and forms a joint on which the hasp can rock in such mannerthat by pressing upon the shank c the ring is disengaged from the fast hook to allow the shutter to be opened.

From the above description it will be seen that the fast hook forms a pivot for the free hook, and is itself secured in place by fastening the apparatus to the shutter. It will also be seen that the two hooks are secured wholly to the inner plate and the outer plate merely acts as a guide for the outer eXtremity of the free hook, hence the removal of this plate does not affect the security of the fastening. The fast hook also does not depend in the slightest degree upon the free hook and hence the working of the latter by a party outside of the shutter does not affect the fastening; this property of the fastening is enhanced by the termination o-f the free hook in a ring of such size that it Cannot be drawn outward through the slot in the inner plate, however much it may be turned up or down. This method of constructing the fastening also greatly faci1itates the molding of the several parts of which it is composed, as their form is such that they can all be placed flatwise in the flask.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the fast and free hooks With the inner plate the same being arranged as herein set forth in such manner that the fast hook forms the pivot for the freeone, and the two are connected to the inner plate in such manner that the movenient, breakage, or removal of the free hook does not affect the security of the fastening, While at the same time the two hooks are secured to the inner plate by the fastening 0f the latter to the shutter.
