Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18. 1906.
Application filed Dcccmhcr 28, 1906. Smal No. 293.600.
To all whom. t may concern;
Be it known that I, Janus ll. Sumo, a citizen of the United States, and n. resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of (ook and State of Illinois, have invented cortnin new and use ul lm irovenn-nrs in Hoists; and I do hereby declare that tho following is a full, clear, and exact doscriptimi of tho same, reference icing had to tho noomnpnn w ing drawings, and to the letters of roforonco marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
[his invention relates to improYonn-nls in hoists, and is shown more particularly as a hoist such as used in well-drilling, though useful for any re uired.
n drilling wells whcro considerable weight must be sup )ortcd upon the hoists and moved but a short distance at a (hoo es, for instance, when loworing tools into or hoisting tools from a well-it has herotoforc boon necessary to stop the motor or engine as ouch Section is adt ed to or taken from the rod or it, is necessary to provide sonic type of shiftin mechanism or power il'tlllrilllhtiiifl) dcrior W ereby the engine or motor can be disconnested from the drum during tho intervals between hoisting or lowering. Various tvpos of transmission devices have been tricd for the purpose, though none of the same hnvc proved entirely satisfactory, owing to the necessity of having the movements of the tool at all times under absolute control,
The object of the invention is to provide a hoisting mechanism whereby is maintained at all times oi ported thereon and whereby the article suprted upon the hoist may allowed to run mo and may be checked at any point in its descent. or when hoisting and supported without stopping or varyi the speed of the engine or motor or the a justment of the transmission mechanism.
It is also an object of the invention to afford a strong, simple, and durable transmission of the class described not likely to 1; out of order and capable of transmitting t a power of the motor with very slight loss of war and whereby the control is positive lin instantaneous, tfereby insuring maximum efficiency.
The invention consists in the matters hereinoftcr described, and more fully pointed out and defined in the qipcnded claims.
In the drawings, igum l is a side elevapurpose for" which it hoist is t e object suprfcct control scoured on snid drum-shaft hetwcon Lion, portly broken, of H, deviceembodying my invention. Fig. L is a ftH'U view of the trnnsmission-com case. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the oonlrolling-wheel. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transvcise section of the split adjustingwollnr. Figs. 5 and (i are contrul longitudinnl sections showing it somewhat more compact construction in which one of the gears is on the end of tho drum.
As shown in the drawings, A, A, and A indicate the rigid posts or uprights, )rovidcd with nlinod hcnringsu, (1,nnd oflnnd inwhich isjournulod the main (.lrum-shuft B. ltigidly the uprights or )USlS A and A is a hoisting-drum, and rigidl y scoured upon said shaft B and ho tween the uprights or posts A and A is the gmir-cnso I). Said gourn-use as shown is circular in firm, providing a rohitivcly broad outer (sylindric lure r! and is provided within tho sumo with a spider, as shown, consisting of four arms d, which are approximately atrangod ninoty dogroos apart, and extend radinlly and in ulinomont with a corresponding boss (I on tho inner face of the pori ihcry d, and, n1; mourn. strong wchs of :nctal 0'' corn littl the inner pcriphory r! of the shell with the outer oxtromity of tho arms (1, thus affording compartments arranged equal distaut-cs apart and equal radial distances from the shaft and in each of which is journalcd a beveled pinion I), having a dimneter greater than the width of said gear-case. As shown, said boss 4 and the arm (1 are drilled axially through tho shell to receive a shaft J, as shown in Fig. 2, and on which said inion is journalcd, and, as shown, a metal p ate d" is rigidly bolted to the shell to cover the end of the shaft and retain the same in place.
Journnlod to rotate freely on the shaft B between the car-case and the t A is a controlling-w ltPl E, which, as s own, comprises a spider having a huh e and arms 0, on which is secured a rim 0, of any suitable ma- .terial, flanged on each side and enga which is a steel or other suitable brake-liiiiig E, the cnds of which. on shown. are hinged to a broad arm E, pivotally engaged on the floor or frame hv moans of a shaft e and which is ucluut by a lover e to draw said brake-band ti ht about the conn. llingwheel or to re ease the same therefrom, as desired. A collar r is secured on said Sllflft tween the hearing a and the controllingwhccl and against which the hub of said wheel bears. Rigidly bolted on the inner upnnrdly from said lllll) ill the sprm-lwtwnih it gen lolluus. The sprotliotinnonsly from the enthe shaft.
as is also the controlling-wheel E, the pinions rotate and turn the controlling-uheel E i t l l t in a diret't ion opposite from the rotation of the sproekebwheel, and the drum-shaft ftniaius at rest. The lrnke-lmnd C, mntrollred by the lever r. l'rit'tionallyengages the drum and is capable of supporting any weight or stress. to which the drum may l e subjected. Show it he desired to rotate the tll'tlltlas, for instanee, in hoisting-the lever is actuated to hold the eontrollingwheel from rotation, whereupon the her- Bled gear F, eonneeted with the cont inuously driven sprocke -wheel l", continues to rotate the pinions D, li -wheol cannot revolve the pinions revo ve around the periphery thereof. thus revolving the gear-ease and the shaft.
